  2. Journal #1: Childhood Experiences • Were there any houses, neighbors, or legends that frightened you as a child? • Did you and your siblings/friends ever dare each other to do something? (like touching the Radley house) • How did you define "courage" and "cowardice" when you were a child? Were your ideas similar to those of Scout, Jem, and Dill? Write at least 8 sentences.

  3. Journal 2: Physical and Moral Courage • Describe a real life example of physical courage. • Describe a real life example of moral courage. • Then, explain how each example fits the definition of physical or moral courage.

  4. Journal 3: Atticus’ Words of Advice Review the following quote from Atticus: “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (30). Respond in paragraph form (8-10 sentences): • What do you think he means? • Where have you seen or heard of examples that connect to this idea?

  5. Journal 4: Point of View • Begin another version of the novel told in first person (“I”) from Boo Radley’s perspective. How would Boo describe Jem, Scout, and Dill? • You might choose a specific scene to re-write, or you can write a scene that is not already in the book. Write at least 8 sentences.

  6. Journal 5: Changing Ideas of Courage • How have Scout and Jem’s ideas about courage changed since the beginning of the book? Which characters and events have contributed to this change? • Write at least 8 sentences.

  7. Journal 6: The Trial • What do you think really happened between Bob, Mayella, and Tom? Why? Use evidence from the film to support your ideas. • Write at least 8 sentences.

Journal 7: Baby Steps Re-read Miss Maudie’s conversation with Scout and Jem on pg. 288-289. • What does Miss Maudie mean when she says, “We’re making a step– it’s just a baby-step, but it’s a step”(289).
