  1. International Air Traffic Interoperability(IATI)Program IntroductionThursday, 16 April 2009 Miami, FL Air Traffic OrganizationOperation Planning Services

  2. International Air Traffic Interoperability (IATI) • Led by the Advanced Technology Development and Prototyping (ATD&P) Group • Incorporates AIRE Partnership initiatives • Designated to: • Support procedures and standards development, • Provide validation of mature solutions • Integrate demonstration projects and programs • Demonstrate implementation alternatives for the NAS • Provides: • Agility and flexibility in demonstrating alternative technologies and concepts • For the integration of near-term emerging technologies, procedures and / or customers’ initiatives with on-going demonstrations

  3. IATI • Supports emerging technology solutions • Allows FAA to: • define how future air traffic and airport operations will be managed • determine how the environment will be protected and enhanced • address how improvements to efficiency, safety and capacity can be achieved near-term • plan for the validation of 4-Dimension Trajectory Based Operations (4-D TBO) for all NAS domains • commence development of performance-based air traffic management (PATM)

  4. IATI • Contributes directly to NextGen concepts • Supports international collaboration • Avoids overlap • Will "de-conflict" activities with national and international organizations (FAA, DoD, and ICAO)

  5. IATI Program Elements • Demonstrations of trajectory-based management in the arrival domain to collect benefit data to validate reductions in the carbon footprint of aviation operations • Flight demonstrations across the Atlantic to provide requirements and standards for future automation upgrades • Surface management improvement demonstrations to reduce taxi times and reduce fuel consumption • Demonstrations based 4D Flight Management Systems (FMS) in support of 4D TBO

  6. IATI Near Term Plans • OPD Prioritization Study • Technical and operational procedures analysis and modeling to support implementation of OPD procedures in the U.S • Trans-Atlantic Flight Demonstration • Flight trials to be conducted across the Atlantic Ocean from Europe to U.S. Flight procedures will be developed, data will be collected and analyzed, and a SRMD or SRMDM produced as appropriate. These trials/demonstrations will be conducted in cooperation with SESAR Joint Undertaking partners • 4D FMS TBO Demo • Install a Data Acquisition and Replay Tool (DART) on a limited number of partner airline’s B737 fleet and collect performance and FMS trajectory data. Analysis will be conducted on today’s procedures to improve flight efficiency, and validate FAA efficiency models in flight • Environmental Metrics Analysis • Technical, analytical, and environmental metrics identification and collection on the AIRE demonstrations and flight trials

  7. IATI Near Term Schedule • Final report on OPD prioritization study (4-30-09) • Trans-Atlantic Flight Demonstration: • Deliverable 1: Integrated oceanic/arrival demonstration plan (6-15-09) • Deliverable 2: SRMD or SRMDM as appropriate (9-15-09) • Deliverable 3: Integrated oceanic/arrival demonstration (9-30-09) • Deliverable 4: Draft data collection and analysis report (10-31-09) • 4D FMS TBO: • Deliverable 1: Airline partner equipage with DART tool (9-30-09) • Deliverable 2: Draft analysis report of DART data (4-30-10) • Deliverable 3: Final analysis report of DART data (6-30-10) • Environmental metrics analytical report (11-30-09)

  8. IATI Partners

  9. IATI Interdependencies • RNAV/RNP • ASDE-X • ADS-B • SWIM • ATOP • ERAM • FMS Avionics

  10. IATI Performance Shortfall The impact of not doing these demonstrations will result in a shortfall for near-term enhancements to the NextGen capability structure including: • Capacity • Efficiency • Safety
