  10. Game genres

  11. The rise of online games One new genre of games is Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs). These became popular in the late 1990s, and they now have nearly 22 million active subscribers. World of Warcraft is a role-play game which has around 11.5 million subscribers. People pay to play, and as many as two million people can play at the same time. Second Life is a 3D world simulation game. It is free to subscribe, but gamers buy and sell virtual land, which generates money for the game company. It has approximately 18 million subscribers.

  12. Latest developments Games technology is constantly evolving. New games are now being developed which are controlled by the player’s full body movements. Advanced multiplayer motion sensing is being incorporated into some games platforms. High definition graphics are now used, and some games can be played in 3D. The Nintendo 3DS is the first 3D handheld device to be released, and does not require 3D glasses. What new games features do you think will be available in five years’ time?

  13. Natural Motion Natural Motion Ltd. is a company that creates high quality 3D character animation in real time. They do this by combining artificial intelligence, biomechanics and dynamics simulation. Their software allows games companies to create characters that can move in a highly realistic way, without using key-frame techniques or motion capture.
