  1. EXPONENTS • Today you will learn how to represent numbers using exponents. • We will discuss vocabulary. • We will discuss exponential form and evaluate expressions involving exponents. • We will practice examples.

  2. Vocabulary

  3. Special Powers squared—when the exponent is a 2 you can say “squared” cubed—when the exponent is a 3 you can say “cubed” SPECIAL RULES!!!! Any base that is raised to the zero power always equals 1. Any base raised to the first power always equals the base.

  4. Perfect square—you can take any number, square it, and find a perfect square Examples:

  5. Examples to try together: Evaluate each expression. • 4³ • 2 to the 4th power • 5² • 7 to the 0 power Write each expression in exponential form. • 7x7x7x7x7 • 1x1x1x1 • 9x9x9 • 18x18

  6. In case Dana’s school closes, a phone tree is used to contact each student’s family. The secretary calls 3 families. Then each of those families calls 3 other families, and so on. How many families will be notified during the 6th round of calls?

  7. Examples to try on your own Write each expression in exponential form. • 8x8x8 • 7x7x7x7x7x7x7x7 • 3x3x3x3 Evaluate each expression. • 6² • 3³ • 1 to the 12th power • 12 to the 1st power • 789 to the zero power

  8. One person will contact 4 people. Each of those will contact 4 other people, and so on. How many people will be contacted in the 5th round?

  9. HOMEWORK Exponent Worksheet 1-3
