  1. Inorganic Nomenclature

  2. Metals are on left of stair-step and non-metals are on the right of the stair-step.

  3. CO2

  4. Nomenclature Naming molecules -composed of two non-metals Type III

  5. 1. Name the first element using prefixes. Exception:Don’t use Mono…

  6. 2. Name the second elements root word + ide using prefixes.

  7. Prefixes

  8. Mono • Di • Tri • Tetra • Penta • Hexa • Hepta • Octa • Non • Deca

  9. N2O4 Dinitrogen tetraoxide

  10. P2O5 diphosphorus pentaoxide

  11. N2O dinitrogen monoxide

  12. CO carbon monoxide

  13. 7.CCl4 • 8.P2S5 • 9.NH3 • 1.SO3 • 2.CO3 • 3.NS • 4.S2Cl3 • 5.H2O • 6.CaCl2

  14. A molecule is composed of two non-metals. What is an ionic compound composed of? (Type I )

  15. A metal and a non-metal

  16. Ionic compounds form when a positive metallic ion and a negative non-metallic ion form and are attracted to each other. The compound has no charge.

  17. Ions form when atoms gain or lose electrons. These ions combine to form compounds.

  18. Naming ionic compounds You name compounds almost the same as molecules. There are only a few differences.

  19. The main difference is that you do not use prefixes! Let’s try some and see how it goes.

  20. What do you call the ionic compound KCl ? potassium chloride Notice there is no prefix being used.

  21. What do you call the ionic compound MgCl2 ? magnesium chloride Still no prefix!

  22. What is CaSO4? Calcium Sulfate, also known as plaster of paris.

  23. What would you call NH4NO3? ammonium nitrate

  24. FeO is called? iron oxide

  25. Fe2O3 is called ? iron oxide But wait, how could there be two different iron oxides with different formulas?

  26. In order to distinguish between the two, you put the charge of the cation (iron) in roman numerals in parenthesis immediately behind the word iron. FeO becomes iron (II) oxide

  27. Fe2O3 becomes iron (III) oxide

  28. CuO is called Copper (II) oxide

  29. Cu2SO4 is called Copper (I) sulfate
