  1. KS&L Research Questions KS&L Workshop – 27 & 28 February, 01 March 2014KS&L + Gender Joint-Workshop – 03 March 2014

  2. KS&L Research • Our BIG research question in AAS: • How can research (RinD) trigger developmental outcomes and impact for poor and marginalized? • We do research on our PROCESS!

  3. Theory of change • Prospective (looking forward) • How we think our research will trigger change, e.g. • Scaling pathways • Hub ToC (the hub development challenge, the flower, star etc and narrative) • Community visions and action plans • Retrospective (looking back) • Modeling how our research did trigger change

  4. Theories of change (at different scales) E.g. analysis of outcome descriptions

  5. Theories of change (at different scales) Theories of change (at different scales)

  6. Group work • What are the KS&L research questions / issues in your hub? • List out, attempt to prioritize (don’t worry if you can’t) and share • From this we’ll develop a more grounded and collective sense of what KS&L research is to help with planning

  7. KS&L Research Questions (Day II) • KS&L Platform: • How often is the platfom updated and what type of information are uploaded into it? • Initiating the innovation platform and how to make it sustainable? • KS&L Research: • What is the process for doing KS&L research? • What are the sample hypotheses for KS&L research? • What is the expected achievement for KS&L research? • What is KS&L research design assuming a hypotheses of KS&L makes RinD more effective? • Cross country comparisons? Each hub or global? • Who is involved in the research process? • Tools/Approaches (Design and Analysis) to KS&L research

  8. KS&L Research Questions (Day II) • M&E Linkage to PM&E: • Diverse tools: Mapping stakeholders analysis • How to link Theory of Change with Most Significant Stories? • How do we use Most Significant Stories (Feedback Information)? • Do we have the capacity to do M&E? • Scaling Pathways: • Are pathways in sequence or simultaneous? Please provide examples. • What are the differences between Pathway 1 and Pathway 2? • How to differentiate between Scaling Pathways vs. IDOs vs. Impacts? • Compare the pathway theory presented with what is happening on the ground? • How do we catalyze stakeholders to form networks? • How do we ensure sustainability of networks?

  9. KS&L Research Questions (Day II) • Documentation: • What are the hubs currently doing? • Development Communications: • Packaging of KS&L information so that it moves from theory to the actual use by end users. • Information Management: • Should online repository be placed in individual countries or globally?

  10. KS&L Research Questions (Day III) • Zambia: • How do you effectively put in place an innovation platform? • How do we sustain networks and innovation platforms • How do we build RinD capacity for AAS implementers? • Philippines: • How we brought people together – identify where our convening power comes from, how relates to institutional structure? • How do our partner typology and approach influence our ability to weave networks • Innovation platforms question (Zambia) • Why are doing KS&L research? What do we want to achieve at the end of the day?

  11. KS&L Research Questions (Day III) • Cambodia: • What are the existing networks in Tonle Sap and how to motivate and encourage KSL? • How do platforms support support KSL goals, understand effectiveness of platforms? • Sustainability of KSL networks? • Solomon Islands: • How can we engage better with women in Maliatahub? • How can we improve communication and information flows across networks? • How can we ensure communities take charge of their information and communication networks and processes?

  12. KS&L Research Questions (Day III) • Bangladesh: • Research on accessing and sharing information in and between communities to support ‘spontaneous’ sharing / action. • Understand information landscape to guide action research • How information flows in and out of communities? Identify pathways and behaviours • How AAS approach, in particular PAR process, contributing to gender transformative change in communities, leadership, water governance. Overall how AAS process builds community capacity to solve own problems
