The Three Ways We Persuade • Ethos (hand) • Logos (head) • Pathos (heart)
Where and when do people use persuasion? • Commercials (radio, TV, internet, etc.) • Written documents (articles, essays, newspapers, magazines, etc.) • When someone wants you to do something for them!!
What is ethos? • Ethos:refers to the credibility, respect or authority/expertise a person has.
Why use ethos as a method to persuade? • We tend to believe people whom we respect. • Celebrities we like and admire appear more believable. • An authority or expert on the subject can appear more trustworthy. • When a product suggests it is authentic or “just like the real thing”, we are more likely to buy it.
Ethos Example: Claim: Students should be allowed to use cell phones during school hours. Write supporting evidence to convince me using ethos.
What is logos? • Logos:persuading by the use of reasoning and logic.
