The basics… • Who: All Grade 10 students • Date: Thursday, March 29, 2012 • Time: 8:15 a.m. • Format: Two Booklets 75 minsfor each booklet • Purpose: To Test Reading and Writing
Check the letter you received in HF today • Next week: Your HF teacher will have a list • Day of the OSSLT: Check the walls in the atrium
If your name isn’t there or you don’t know where to write your test, go and see Ms Shire. Mississauga Secondary School
What you will need to bring … • A pencilwith an eraser (for Multiple Choice) • Black or Blue Pen(for written answers) • Bottled water is permitted
What you cannot bring … • A dictionary • iPods, cell phones or other electronic devices • Food of any kind • Any type of beverage other than water
Make sure you … • Ask QUESTIONS, before the test • Once the test begins, you will NOT be allowed to talk or share with others • You will NOT be able to ask anyone for assistance
Yes that is right, you cannotask any questions once the test begins!
When instructed to do so … • Check to make sure you have Booklets I and II and the student answer sheet • Check to make sure the 12 digit numbers are the same on all items • Pay close attention to the last three digits
This will help you focus on the information most needed to identify the correct answer choice
There are five different reading selections: 1) News Article 2) Dialogue 3) Information paragraph 4) Graphical Text 5) Real-life narrative
With the reading selections, you will have to answer: • Multiple Choice Questions • open response (short answer) questions
Writing on the osslt
Writing on the OSSLT • You will have two long writing tasks: • A news report • A series of paragraphs expressing an opinion • You will have two short writing tasks: • Both tasks will be a six-line paragraph response to a question or statement • Example: What is your favourite time of the year? Explain why
Essential Survival Strategies for the OSSLT Read all instructionscarefully. Keep track of time. Look for key words and phrases in the questions. Write the required amount. Do not write too much or too little.
REVIEW your responses and make ROUGH NOTES and PLAN using the spaces provided.
