  2. TIPS ON NOTE TAKING: GREEN - Don't write it down if you don't want. It is there
for to read and make a mental note. BLUE - You should write this information down, but put it in
your own words. Don't worry about coping it exactly. Put
it in a way that you'll remember. BLACK - You need to write this down. It is important. If
you can find a way to write it using less words that okay, but
make sure you are getting this information in your notes. RED - This is very important and needs to be written in your

  10. Sub-Saharan Africa How is Africa a continent of great geographic contrasts? What do you already know about Africa?

  11. An Unusual Continent * Africa is the second-largest
continent in the world. It occupies more than triple the area of the
United States. * Unlike most continents most
of Africa is a large plateau. * For most of Africa's history,
its discouraged seagoing trade
because of its lack of harbors.

  12. A Vast Desert How many of you have been to the desert?

  13. A Vast Desert * The Sahara is the worlds
largest desert - about 3.5 million square miles. * The Sahara covers most of
northern Africa except for the Nile
Valley and along the Mediterranean coastline.

  14. The Sahel What kind of environment is the opposite of a
desert?

  15. The Sahel * The word Sahel is Arabic
for "shore." * The Sahel is a fertile region
with limited and unpredictable
rainfall along the southern edge
of the Sahara. * It supports crops and herds
of animals.  * Droughts are a constant
thread to the people who live there.

  16. Vegetation Zones Can you identify on this map where Africa's most fertile
zones are?

  17. Vegetation Zones * The Sahel is similar to the
American prairies. * Further south is the savannah.
It has wet and dry season. * South of the savannah is the
rainforest. It is hot and wet all
year long. * The rainforest has been cut
down as towns and cities grow.

  18. The Niger River Why are rivers so important for civilizations to
develop?

  19. The Niger River * The Niger River is the main
river in Sub-Saharan Africa. It
flows all the way to the Atlantic
Ocean. * It gave a reliable source of
water to West African civilization
in a dry region. It allowed
farmers to grow crops. * Yearly flooding of the Niger
River allowed for the growth and
development of West African
civilizations.

  20. Niger River Map

  21. Africa's Natural Resources Can you identify these natural resources?

  22. Africa's Natural Resources * Trade good came across the
desert by camel caravan. * Contact with other parts of
the world came along with this
trade. * Africa is rich with minerals - most prized resource was gold. * Other valuable minerals:
copper, iron, diamonds and salt.

  23. Africa's Natural Resources * Africans were skilled and
successful farmers. * Ancient civilizations (Greece and Rome) enslaved people and traded them.

  24. Important things to remember: * The yearly flooding of the Niger River allowed for the
growth and development of West African Civilizations.
