  1. Clubs Formation U11 age group

  2. Game Positions CC United has a different shape at the U9,11 and U13 age groups. The team shape expands and covers as much as the field as possible in possession of the ball and constricts without over committing reducing space for the opposition without the ball. Defining it as a shape allows players to move freely around the field, interchanging positions as long as the shape is maintained. This means that all field players have the opportunity to attack and must develop the all techniques to do so. It also means that each player must be comfortable in different areas of the field both defending (realizing where cover will come from) and attacking (realizing where support is located). At U11 the game starts to look real with more positions, direct free-kicks and the offside rule added. Players will play multiple positions (including Goalkeeper) but as the field is bigger their effectiveness may have a lot to do with their physical and technical abilities. Their success in central positions will have a lot to do with their tactical ability (decisions). The goal of the coach is that by the end of summer at U12 moving into fall at U13 that players have become familiar playing in either a zone (Goalkeeper/Defense/midfield/forward) or a side of the field. The table below lists the attributes used more frequently by each position The Following slides show how the shape works both with and without the ball and with players understanding the roles of each position they will become more effective on the field.

  3. Formation 3-3-1 GK RD CD LD CM RM LM S

  4. Defend: Provide cover to last defender- when we are in attack and play outside your penalty area when the back line and team pushes up to halfway line Dominate your box, stop balls from crosses and shots Communication (organize defense to prevent shots) Correct positioning based on position of ball and center of goal Attack: Be ready for a back pass when opponents play the ball long behind our back line Be ready for a quick transition to start the attack Awareness of outlet Look for the longest outlet 1st Good distribution (throw-kick) Goalkeeper RD CD LD RD CD LD RM CM LM S

  5. Defend: Mark attackers zonally (don’t get pulled out of position) Provide Pressure when the ball is in your zone Cover to the central midfield and outside Defenders Balance when the forward is the 1st defender Communicate to players in front and to the side Attack: Be ready to receive a pass off next line of players Be ready to support players 1 link away Be ready to play back to the goalkeeper when the ball is played behind Quality distribution away from trouble Middle link in diamond Be ready to switch play Be ready to follow your pass to make numerical advantage in the midfield zone Central Defender

  6. Defend: Mark attackers in your area Be ready to mark attacking players that run past the wide midfielders Priority is to mark so wide midfielder is open Provide: Pressure when the ball is in your zone Cover to central defender and wide midfielder Balance when the forward pressures the ball on the side of the field Attack: Provide an outlet, utilize full width of field Look to make forward runs without the ball (overlaps) Good communication when ball is passed inside Provide good support to wide midfielder and to central players Awareness of whether to cross the ball or dribble Wide Defenders

  7. Defend: Mark and track players in the central areas of the field Provide Pressure – when the ball is in your zone Cover- when the forward pressures the ball Be aware of where covering players are to in order to channel the attacker in a specific direction Provide good information- which way eth forward should send their player Attack: Stay central and be the pivot in changing the point of attack Be available to receive a pass from any player Provide central support to all players Supporting runs beyond striker Be aware of space to exploit Look to pick up pieces from defender’s or striker’s tackles Short and long passes, be ready to switch play Midfielder

  8. Defend: Mark and track runs of attackers in your area of field Provide cover to central midfielder and forward Provide balance when ball is on opposite side of field Be aware if outside defender is not marking and pass on attacking player Hold position when wide defender goes forward Attack: Provide an outlet, utilize full width of field Good communication when ball is passed inside Provide good support to central players Either pass in overlapping wide defender or use them as a decoy Look to make forward runs without the ball Awareness of isolation and space If isolated 1v1 take on defender-If space attack Be prepared to switch play to opposite side Selection of crosses into the penalty area Outside Midfielder

  9. Defend: Pressure on the ball-force defender’s to play towards their own goal Take advantage of defenders mistakes Channel play onto next defender Relative pressure on the ball either to close down or the channel in a specific direction Attack: Stay as central as possible Stay as high as possible whilst being aware of the offside rule Shoot on sight Movement off ball to support team mates Diagonal runs in front of defenders to move them Diagonal runs behind of defenders to get open Striker

  10. Formation 3-3-1And who they cover GK RD CD LD CM RM LM S

  11. Formation 3-3-1And who they cover GK LD CD RD RM The players are attached by an imaginary Rope so when one moves the players directly behind get pulled along In this diagram the Right Midfielder has gone to challenge the ball so the Right Defender gets pulled along to cover and the remaining 2 defenders move across

  12. Formation 3-3-1And who they cover GK LD RD CD CM The players are attached by an imaginary piece of string so when one moves the players directly behind get pulled along In this diagram the Central Midfielder has gone to challenge the ball so the Central Defender gets pulled along to cover and the wide defender pinch in to over the central defender

  13. Roles Left Defender (LD) is applying pressure to the ball Central Defender (CD) is providing cover for LD. If opponent gets past LD, CD will provide immediate pressure Goalkeeper is standing on imaginary line between center of goal and ball. Provides loud communication to team Right Defender (RD) is in a position where he can provide adequate cover for central defender and still see his wide opponent Midfielder (M) is ready to intercept cross or recover ball quickly if marking player tackles opponent. Staying aware of our strikers position Left Midfielder (LM) will track opponent’s defensive players moving up and also apply pressure on the ball on the outside forcing the attacker in. Staying aware of our strikers position Right Midfielder (RM) sees that RD is not marking and will pass on his mark to the RD and then become an outlet Striker (S) is looking for space to move into when we regain possession. In this scenario the player on the ball has 3 options If he looks to beat (LD) on his right he will run into the covering (CD) and also the goal-line. If he looks to cross early (CD) or (M) will intercept. If he looks to dribble inside he runs into (CD) and (M). One of the most important aspects of soccer is transition and this team should be thinking about how to exploit the space that the yellow team has given. Defending our Left GK RD CD LD M RM LM S

  14. Defending our Right • Roles • Right Midfielder(RM) is applying pressure to the ball • Right Defender (RD) has moved up the field and is providing cover if the player on the ball dribbles outside • Central Defender (CD) is providing cover for RD. If opponent gets past RD, CD is to provide immediate pressure • Left Defender (LD) is in a position where he can provide adequate cover for central defender and still see his wide opponent • Goalkeeper is standing on imaginary line between center of goal and ball. Provides loud communication to team • Midfielder (M) is ready if the attacking player dribbles inside • Left Midfielder(LM) will track opponent’s defensive players unless (LD) is not marking and then they will pass on their player. (LM) is also ready to move inside to provide cover for (M) if player on the ball dribbles inside • Striker (S) is looking for space to move into when we regain possession. • In this scenario the player on the ball has 3 options • If he looks to beat (RM) on his left he will run into the covering (RD). If he looks to dribble inside he runs into (M) and (M). If the player on the ball passes back the Striker is ready to pressure the ball • One of the most important aspects of soccer is transition and this team should be thinking about how to exploit the space that the yellow team has given. GK LD CD LM RD M RM S

  15. Roles Goalkeeper is standing on imaginary line between center of goal and ball. Provides loud communication to team. Goalkeeper is set and ready for the shot Central Defender (CD) is and applying pressure to the ball Left Defender (LD) is providing cover for CD. If opponent gets past CD on our left side Left LD is to provide immediate pressure Right Defender (RD) is providing cover for CD. If opponent gets past CD on our right side Right RD is to provide immediate pressure Midfielder (M) is applying pressure on the ball looking to force the forward onto his weaker side to reduce the effectiveness of the shot . Staying aware of our strikers position Left Midfielder(LM) will track opponent’s defensive players moving up. Staying aware of our strikers position Right Midfielder (RM) will track opponent’s defensive players moving up. Staying aware of our strikers position Striker (S) is looking for space to move into when we regain possession. In this scenario the role of the Central defender (CD) is critical as not only is he the 1st to apply pressure on the ball in a high risk area but he must react and recover if the forward passes right or left and become the 2nd defender to the fullbacks. Defending our Center GK RD LD CD LM RM M S

  16. Roles Goalkeeper is standing on imaginary line between center of goal and ball. Central Defender (CD) is possessing ball and looking for a fast pass to striker. If not available make quick safe outlet pass Left and right Defenders (RD’LD) are looking to get forward if the ball goes into (F) or (M) and looks like going onto their side of the field to overlap. If ball goes onto their side and wide midfielder pushes forward the outside defenders will push forward and fill the space late. They cannot both go forward as they cannot risk leaving (CD) isolated against 3 opponents Midfielder (M) is holding space in the central area giving his markers a choice of marking him and leaving wide spaces or marking space and leaving (M) open Left Midfielder(LM) is sprinting wide and going forward to either get open or force the opposing team to mark opening up space in the middle. Right Midfielder(LM) is sprinting wide and going forward to either get open or force the opposing team to mark opening up space in the middle. Striker (S) is occupying the central defenders and looking to move to receive a pass. In this scenario (S) moves side to side to receive a pass. M gets ready to support and if the opponents move central wide midfielders will run beyond to receive a pass behind the opponents defenders Early Transition from Defense GK RD LD CD RM LM M S

  17. Roles Right Defender (RD) is looking for quick pass to striker, if not looking overlap pass and overlap the RM Central Defender (CD) is providing support to the player on the ball. CD is ready to move across to cover for RD should he continue to go forward Left Defender (LD) is ready to move across to cover for CD should he need to cover RD Midfielder (M) is forming the center of the diamond shape providing support inside to RD Left Midfielder(LM) is forming the Left wide point of the offensive diamond shape. LM will needs to be available for a switch if the opponents move central Right Midfielder(RM) is forming the Right wide point of the offensive diamond shape. Shows that he is available for a pass Striker (S) is moving to create space and forcing opponents out of position while remaining aware of the positions of M and opponents goalkeeper as well as Off-side. In this scenario 2 things are vital That the forward stays as high up the field as possible That the player on the ball reacts to pressure. If the pressure stops the pass to the forward then the ball stays wide with an overlap. If the pressure stops the overlap then the ball is played to the striker who checks into the space created Late Transition from Defense GK CD RD LD M RM LM S

  18. Roles Goalkeeper has moved out of penalty area and is ready if the team loses the ball and plays a pass long Central Defender (CD) is providing support for team mates while making sure opponents don’t get behind him. CD is getting ready to move if either (WD’S) go forward Left Defender (LD) is forming the Left wide point of the defensive diamond shape. Ready to provide support or overlaps based on the path of the ball Right Defender (RD) is forming the Right wide point in the defensive diamond shape. Ready to provide support or overlaps based on the path of the ball Midfielder (M) is forming the rear center of the offensive diamond shape. Looks to attack the space and get as close to goal as possible to shoot Left Midfielder(LM) is staying wide and open. He forms the wide Left point in the offensive diamond shape. Look for early cross, if not available, safe pass to open team mate. If ball goes wide on opposite side player will attack the back post Right Midfielder(RM) is staying wide and open. He forms the wide Left point in the offensive diamond shape. Look for early cross, if not available, safe pass to open team mate. If ball goes wide on opposite side player will attack the back post Striker (S) is moving to create space and forcing opponents out of position while remaining aware of the positions of M and opponents goalkeeper as well as Off-side. Striker is ready to follow up on the rebounds of a shot attack space if the ball goes wide for a cross Offensive Possession GK CD WD LD M RM LM S

  19. Roles Goalkeeper moves out of his penalty area and provides cover for the defenders Central Defender (CD) is between the opponents striker and our goal while being ready to sprint forward to intercept pass Left Defender (LD) moves toward a cover position to CD while watching the position of the wide opponents Right Defender (RD) is responsible for marking the wide forward but moves into position to be able to recover if played over his head or win the ball in front. Midfielder (M) is sprinting to provide pressure on the ball or cover if striker (S) gets there first. Seek opportunity to intercept pass Left Midfielder(LM) moves to a position between the opponents Wide Defender and our goal while being ready to sprint to intercept pass compacting the field Right Midfielder (RM) moves to a position between the opponents Wide Defender and our goal while being ready to sprint to intercept pass. This player may become 1st defender if the central defender has a first touch wide Striker (S) is sprinting to provide pressure on ball carrier or cover if Midfielder (M) gets there first. Seek opportunity to intercept pass In this scenario the object of the team is to keep the ball on the right hand side as we are potentially 5v3. The team must apply pressure to the ball and not totally fill spaces but invite the opposition to be hit into specific areas. Transition from Offense GK CD RD LD M RM LM S
