  1. Take out notebook, folder, pencil box and agenda. • Copy the question and answer in sentences, at the back of your notebook: • Why do engineers often say “Failure is a success”? Walk-In

  2. Failure is success if you learn something new, and make changes to improve. • Each improvement is called an ITERATION. Answer

  3. Engineering Challenge – Spaghetti Tower

  4. Your materials: • 20 pieces of spaghetti per group • 20 small marshmallows per group • 1 large marshmallow per group • 1 foot of tape per group • 1 piece of paper • The challenge:  Each group needs to construct a tower that will support one large marshmallow at the top.   • The group that builds the highest free-standing tower wins the competition. Spaghetti and Marshmallow Tower!

  5. BOX #1 Criteria Build the tallest tower possible, that can hold a large marshmallow at the top. Constraints • 20 pieces of spaghetti per group • 20 small marshmallows per group • 1 large marshmallow per group • 1 foot of tape per group • 1 piece of paper Spaghetti and Marshmallow Tower!

  6. Form a group of 3, remembering to choose people you will work well with and who will help you to do your best! • Complete boxes 1, 2 and 3 of your worksheet, after discussing and brainstorming solutions. Sketch your design. • Get Mrs. Ryan’s approval signature in Box 3. • Get your materials and try out your design! • Make at least TWO ITERATIONS of IMPROVEMENTS. Record your changes on your sheet. • Can we create and improve in 25 minutes total?  • If not enough time, store your materials in your group baggie, or on the floor where you are told. Recording your work…

  7. Find your papers in the stack in the middle of your table. • Look at your scores. • Mrs. Ryan needs the PINK TESTS back. The others are for you to keep or put in recycle bin. • Anyone whose test showed they need to do more practice will see Mrs. Ryan shortly for a take-home assignment. Walk-In

  8. Continue to build your tower, then make improvements. • Remember to complete boxes #4, #5 and #6 while working. • Each group gets one giant marshmallow to put on top. • We will begin measuring towers when there are 20 minutes left. BE READY! • After that, we will share our designs. Today…

  9. Explain to the class what went well in your design, which improvements you made, and anything you would still improve if you could. Communicate results

  10. Watch this video clip about engineering marvels, things created in difficult conditions and against the odds! Video clip
