Objectives • Learn how to build trust with newly recruited OSY. • Discover effective ways to keep students engaged and motivated. • To ensure that the student leaves the provider’s care with the knowledge and network to help them continue their educational goals. 2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event

Building Trust • What are some ways of building trust? • Be Culturally competent. • Be knowledgeable about resources in • the community in order to address any • needs the OSY may have. • Have handouts, hygiene products, etc. • on hand to share with the student. • Don’t promise anything unless you are • sure you can follow through. • Leave contact information. • Be a positive and reassuring influence in the OSY’s life. • Provide educational services or connect the OSY with a MEP tutor. 2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event

  7. Goal Setting GOSOSY created Goal Setting materials to give service providers and students a platform to discuss the importance of setting goals and the tools to get there. Those working many years in migrant education noticed that students - OSY in particular - are often confused when asked about their goals. Many have never had the opportunity to really think about what they would like to accomplish in their lives - academically or otherwise.   13. WhatsApp • This free app will allow you to reach out to students internationallyCreate Group pages (up to 250)    - attach lessons/pictures of homework    - leave voice/text messages    - video call the student 2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event

  14. Facebook • Allows students to use the app’s feature to network with other students near and far. • Allows tutor to stay in touch with the OSY if they depart the area and possibly return. 2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event

ZOOM, Skype & Facetime These three sites will allow you to directly interact with students face-to-face being far away.Skype - up to 25 people at a timeFacetime – one-to-one Zoom- up to 100 people Great way to work with students far away and have scheduling conflicts. 2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event

  16. Duolingo& Babbel • These two platforms are a great way for both the student and teacher learn a new language. • Allows the participant to work at their own pace at anytime. 2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event

  17. USA Learns This site allows students to work at their own site and work on areas of their interest. Tutor also can administer the site and check on their progress and correct any work the student has done. 2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event

  19. Micro SD Cards These cards will allow the tutor to store audio file lessons for the student to complete and use anytime they wish. If the student moves away, they will still have access to the materials. Very inexpensive 2018 Joint CIG Dissemination Event
