  1. 7.6 Visible Radiation Drives Light Reactions

  2. -Sunlight is a type of energy called radiation, or electromagnetic energy. -Electromagnetic energy travels in space as rhythmic waves. -The distance between the crests of two adjacent waves is called wavelength.

  3. -Light-absorbing molecules called pigments, built into the thylakoid membranes, absorb some wavelengths of light and reflect or transmit other wavelengths. -When we look at a leaf we only see the green wavelengths that are reflected by the pigments.

  4. -Different pigment absorb light of different wavelengths, and chloroplasts contain several kinds of pigments. Pigments appear the color they reflect. -Chlorophyll a: absorbs blue-violet and red reflects green -Chlorophyll b: absorbs blue and orange reflects yellow-green -Carotenoids: absorbs blue-green reflects yellow-orange

  5. -A photon is a fixed quantity of light energy, and the shorter the wavelength, the greater the energy. -Each type of pigment absorbs certain wavelengths of light because it is able to absorb the specific amounts of energy in those photons.
