  3. YourSkeleton determines theshape of yourbody. • The Backbone, or vertebral columnisthe center of theskeleton. • There are 26 smallbones or vertebrate, that make up yourbackbone. Shape and Support

  4. Yourskeletonallowsyoutomove. Most of thebody’sbones are associated with muscles. • The musclespullonthebonestomakeyourbodymove. • Bonesalsoprotectmany of theorgans in yourbody. Movement and Protection

  5. Some of yourbones produce substances that yourbodyneeds. • Bonesalsostoremineralssuch as calcium and phosphorus. Whenthebodyneeds this minerals, thebonesreleasesmallamounts of themintotheblood. Production and Storage of Substances

  6. AJointis a place in thebodywheretwobones come together. • Jointsallowbonestomove in differentways. • There are twokinds of joints: • Immovablejoints • Movablejoints. Joints of theSkeleton

  7. Thesejoints in thebodyconnectbones in a way that allowlittle or no movement. • The bones of theskull are heldtogetherbyimmovablejoints. ImmovableJoints

  8. Movablejointsallowthebodytomake a widerange of movements. The bones in movablejoints are heldtogetherbystrongconnectivetissuescalledligaments. • Most jointshave a secondtype of connectivetissue, calledcartilage, whichis more flexible thanbone. • Cartilagecoverstheends of thebones and keepsthemfromrubbingagainsteachother, • A fluid lubricatestheends of thebones, allowingthemtomovesmoothlyovereachother.
