  2. Goal 11 Birmingham City in 1963 that met protestors with police dogs and firehoses. Brought national attention to the movement and forced the government to respond.

  5. Goal 11 Civil Rights Act, 1964 Civil Rights law passed after JFK’s death that banned segregation in all public places.

  23. Goal 11 Detente Nixon’s policy of relaxing tensions between the superpowers. Led to several arms reduction treaties with the USSR and a state visit to communist China in 1972.

  24. Goal 11 Voting Rights Act National law passed to guarantee voting privileges to African Americans across the nation.

  36. Goal 11 Freedom Riders Group of civil disobedience protestors who rode into segregation bus stations to prove the point of civil rights abuses. Some were injured and killed in a bomb that was placed on one of the buses.

  37. Goal 11 Tet Offensive This was the turning point of the Vietnam Conflict as the Communist forces mounted a massive offensive and although they were defeated it served to discourage the American military and public in January of 1968.

  42. Goal 11 Bay of Pigs Failed invasion of Cuba by Cuban nationalist exiles trying to oust Fidel Castro. The exiles had US help and were completely defeated. Great embarrassment to the Kennedy Administration.

  43. Goal 11 Korean War War fought to stop the invasion of communists across the 38th parallel. Fought from 1950-1953. War begun under Truman and ended under Eisenhower.

  44. Goal 11 Suburbia or Levittown The word describes the growth of the areas surrounding urban areas as many American sought a quieter lifestyle.

  45. Goal 11 Gulf of Tonkin Resolution Resolution that asked US Congress to retaliate against North Vietnam for attacks against US vessels near Vietnam that led to war in Vietnam.

  46. Goal 11 Martin Luther King Jr. Leader of the non-violent disobedience Civil Rights Movement that began in Montgomery Alabama and spread across the nation.

  47. Goal 11 Berlin Airlift Cold War confrontation where the US had to fly supplies into Germany city in order to prevent its takeover by communist forces under the USSR.
