  1. Acts 13 Proclamation

  2. Taking “Chances” While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." Acts 13:2

  3. “Proclamation” Today ?? I want what he’s got…?

  4. “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. John 14:27 What Did Jesus Proclaim? For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. John 1:17 "So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:36 "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. John 13:34

  5. Who Else Proclaims? What is the point?

  6. “Demythologizing” the New Testament "Luke's history is unsurpassed in respect of its trustworthiness… Luke is a historian of the first rank; not merely are his statements of fact trustworthy . . . this author should be placed along with the very greatest historians” Sir William Ramsay, The Bearing of Recent Discovery on the Trustworthiness of the New Testament (Grand Rapids: Baker, 1953), p. 222 Dibelius: “These speeches, without doubt, are as they stand inventions of the author…” Bultmann: “a historical fact which involves a resurrection from the dead is utterly inconceivable!” “…they sailed to Cyprus…the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence.” Acts 13:4,7

  7. Taking “Chances” But going on from Perga, they arrived at Pisidian Antioch, and on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down. After the reading of the Law and the Prophets the synagogue officials sent to them, saying, "Brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say it." Acts 13:14-15

  8. The “Religious” Person (Acts 13:16-52) So Paul stood, lifted his hand to quiet them, and started speaking. “Men of Israel,” he said, “and you God-fearing Gentiles, listen to me.” “The God of this nation of Israel chose our ancestorsand made them multiply and grow strong during their stay in Egypt. Then with a powerful arm he led them out of their slavery. He put up with themthrough forty years of wandering in the wilderness.

  9. The “Religious” Person (Acts 13:16-52) “Then he destroyed seven nations in Canaan and gave their land to Israel as an inheritance. All this took about 450 years. “After that, God gave them judges to rule until the time of Samuel the prophet. Then the people begged for a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, who reigned for forty years. But God removed Saul and replaced him with David, a man about whom God said, ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him to do.’ And it is one of King David’s descendants, Jesus, who is God’s promised Savior of Israel!

  10. The “Religious” Person (Acts 13:16-52) John proclaimed before His coming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. And while John was completing his course, he kept saying, 'What do you suppose that I am? I am not He. But behold, one is coming after me the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.'

  11. The “Religious” Person (Acts 13:16-52) “Brothers—you sons of Abraham, and also you God-fearing Gentiles—this message of salvation has been sent to us! The people in Jerusalem and their leaders did not recognize Jesus as the one the prophets had spoken about. Instead, they condemned him, and in doing this they fulfilled the prophets’ words that are read every Sabbath. They found no legal reason to execute him, but they asked Pilate to have him killed anyway. It was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. We thought his troubles were a punishment from God,a punishment for his own sins! But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins.He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. All of us, like sheep, have strayed away.We have left God’s paths to follow our own.Yet the LORD laid on him the sins of us all. Isaiah 53:4-6

  12. The “Religious” Person (Acts 13:16-52) We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life.1 John 1:1 For we were not making up clever stories when we told you about the powerful coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. We saw his majestic splendor with our own eyes 2 Peter 1:16 “When they had done all that the prophecies said about him, they took him down from the cross and placed him in a tomb. ButGod raised him from the dead! And over a period of many days he appeared to those who had gone with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to the people of Israel.

  13. The “Religious” Person (Acts 13:16-52) “Another psalm explains it more fully: ‘You will not allow your Holy One to rot in the grave.’ This is not a reference to David, for after David had done the will of God in his own generation, he died and was buried with his ancestors, and his body decayed. No, it was a reference to someone else—someone whom God raised and whose body did not decay. “And now we are here to bring you this Good News: The promise was made to our ancestors, and God has now fulfilled it for us, their descendants, by raising Jesus. “This is what the second psalm says about Jesus: ‘You are my Son. Today I have become your Father.’ For God had promised to raise him from the dead, not leaving him to rot in the grave. He said, ‘I will give you the sacred blessings I promised to David.’

  14. The “Religious” Person (Acts 13:16-52)

  15. The “Religious” Person (Acts 13:16-52) καταγγέλλω "Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you…” “…and through Him everyone who believes is freed from all things” “…you could not be freed through the Law of Moses.” because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin. Romans 3:20 he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying. Hebrews 2:15

  16. The “Religious” Person (Acts 13:16-52) “Be careful! Don’t let the prophets’ words apply to you. For they said, ‘Look, you mockers, be amazed and die! For I am doing something in your own day, something you wouldn’t believe even if someone told you about it.’” Just as it is written, "HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO BRING GOOD NEWS OF GOOD THINGS!" However, they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says, "LORD, WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR REPORT?" Rom. 10:15-16

  17. The “Religious” Person (Acts 13:16-52) As Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people kept begging that these things might be spoken to them the next Sabbath. Now when the meeting of the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and of the God-fearing proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, were urging them to continue in the grace of God.

  19. The “Religious” Person (Acts 13:16-52) The next Sabbath nearly the whole city assembled to hear the word of the Lord. But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began contradictingthe things spoken by Paul, and were blaspheming.

  20. The “Religious” Person (Acts 13:16-52) Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldlyand said, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first; since you repudiate it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles. "For so the Lord has commanded us, 'I HAVE PLACED YOU AS A LIGHT FOR THE GENTILES, THAT YOU MAY BRING SALVATION TO THE END OF THE EARTH.'“ When the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord; and as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed. But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. AND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED 1 Peter 3:14

  21. The “Religious” Person (Acts 13:16-52) And the word of the Lord was being spread through the whole region. But the Jews incited the devout women of prominence and the leading men of the city, and instigated a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district. But they shook off the dust of their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium. And the disciples were continually filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
