  1. waterfall height (m) 979 A 900 B C 914 D 948 Meter 979 m A meter is about 39.37 inches, a little more than 1 yard.

  2. The Metric System The Metric System is a system of measurement that uses base
units and prefixes. The base you use depends on what you're
measuring. This goes for the prefixes as well. Converting is easy
using this system because all of the units are based on multiples
of 10. This system is used all over the world except for here in
the United States. Click the tape measure to see what you
would weigh in milligrams, grams, and
kilograms! Back to navigation Base Units

  3. The Metric System - Base Units Click each measurement tool to see the base units. Length METER Weight GRAM Volume LITER Back to navigation Metric Prefixes Back to Metric System

  4. The Metric System - Prefixes Milli = 1,000 (smaller) Centi = 100 (smaller) Deci/Deka = 10 (smaller) Kilo = 1,000 (bigger) What are
some tricks
that can help
you
remember
these
prefixes? Back to navigation Metric Base Units Metric Length

  5. Metric Length Conversions/Relationships 1,000 millimeters (mm)= 1 meter (m) 100 centimeters (cm) = 1 meter (m) 1 meter (m) = 1,000 kilometers (km) Click below to get some hints for remembering these measurements. A millimeter is
the thickness of
your fingernail. A centimeter is
the width of
your finger. A meter is just
a little longer
than a yard. A kilometer is
just a little
longer than a
mile. Millimeters Centimeters Meters Kilometers Back to Navigation Metric System Metric Weight

  6. Metric Weight Conversions 1,000 milligrams (mg) = 1 gram (g) 1,000 grams (g) = 1 kilogram (kg) If a paperclip weighs about one gram, can you
imagine how small something has to be to weight
only a milligram?! This also means that
something weighing one kilogram would weigh
about the same as 1,000 paperclips. Metric Length Metric Volume Back to Navigation

  7. Metric Volume/Capacity Conversions 1,000 milliliters (mL) = 1 liter (L) 1,000 liters (L) = 1,000 kiloliters (kL) About 20 to 25 drops from a dropper would
equal about 1 milliliter. Pull Pull When you go to the grocery store and buy a
bottle of soda, those bottles are about
equal to 2 liters. Pull Pull Since there are 1,000 liters in 1 kiloliter, then it
would take 500 2 liter sodas from the grocery
store to equal 1 kiloliter. Pull Pull Back to Navigation Metric Weight

  8. Use your metric ruler to help you answer this question: What is the length of this line segment? ANSWER __________ centimeters

  9. Equivalent Measurements Metric ___ millimeters = 1 centimeter ___ centimeters = 1 meter ___ centimeters = 2 meters ___ millimeters = 2 centimeters ___ millimeters = 1 meter

  10. Using Forms of Measurement Metric Which form of measurement would you use to measure the following objects? Drag the form of measurement to the correct item. millimeters kilometers meters centimeters kilometers millimeters meters centimeters

  11. Choose the best measurement for each object:

  12. 0.1 meters 1,000 0.001 kilometer m 1 1 decimeter dm 10 cm centimeter 0.01 1000 mm 0.001 In the metric system, 2 consecutive units of measure differ by one decimal point. kilo - 1000 deci - 1/10 centi - 1/100 milli - 1/1000

  13. mass - (weight) amount of material in something capacity - (volume) amount of material to fill a space kilogram 1,000 0.001 g 1 1 mg milligram 1,000 mass: gram, milligram, kilogram capacity: liter, milliliter
