Place Value 17/04/2014. The digits 0 – 9 are like ‘MAGIC’. Understanding numbers. Number positions to the left of the 1’s column are always 10 times larger. Example Once you have 10 groups of 10s you have 100(one hundred). Once you have 10 groups of 100 you have 1 000 (one thousand).

  2. Understanding numbers • Number positions to the left of the 1’s column are always 10 times larger. Example • Once you have 10 groups of 10s you have 100(one hundred). • Once you have 10 groups of 100 you have 1 000 (one thousand). • Once you have 10 groups of 1 000 you have 10 000 (ten thousand). • Watch the explanation:

  3. Placing numbers on a chart • Draw this chart up into your books.

  4. Let’s Practise • If my house sold for $6 495. • That is six thousand four hundred and ninety-five dollars. • What would this look like on a place value chart?

  5. Try your own! • It is your turn now to complete two place value numbers to demonstrate your understanding. Your task: • 1. Write the number. • 2. Represent it on the table. • 3. Write it in a sentence. • 4. Write the number in words. It will look something like this:

  6. Example: • 1. My number is 7 324 • 2. • 3. My family won the lottery last week and the winning prize was $7 324. • 4. Seven thousand, three hundred and twenty-four.

  7. Challenge yourself • If you would like to challenge yourself why not try numbers in the Ten thousands or Hundred Thousands. • Your column will look like this instead.

  8. Off you go! • 1. My number is 7 324 • 2. • 3. My family won the lottery last week and the winning prize was $7 324. • 4. Seven thousand, three hundred and twenty-four. To let us know you are done place a tower of three unifix blocks at your working station and collect a Math task card and complete in your Math work books.
