  1. Ancient Greece During the time of Homer and the Odyssey

  2. Greece • southeastern country in Europe • beautiful country, with weather similar to ours because of its Mediterranean climate.

  3. Architecture • Religion was important to Greeks so they built beautiful temples for their gods. • Greek architecture is noted for its white columns and statues.

  4. Gods & Goddesses • Greeks believed in gods: • Zeus, Athena, and Poseidon • “controlled” earthly occurrences • acted very human: • emotions and actions

  5. Hospitality to Guests • guests were godsends • given the best treatment possible • mistreating a guest = angering the gods

  6. Homer • blind minstrel? • minstrel is a person who travels from place to place, reciting epic poems to the people • Exist? • Wrote The Odyssey and The Iliad

  7. Uhh… what’s an “epic”? (paraphrase) • Poems characterized by great length, multiple settings, numerous characters, and a long time span. • Epics usually have a hero who is traveling on a long journey or overcoming an important obstacle. The hero’s story is usually spans over a long period of time and has supernatural forces (such as the gods).

  8. The Odyssey • Written by Homer • Greek story: soldier, named Odysseus, tries to get home after the 10 year Trojan War. And now presenting… The Odyssey by Mrs. Wu
