Supporting Implementation of the Common Core State Standards • Building a strong system of supports for implementation • Setting clear goals, expectations and a process for checking progress on implementation • Developing cadres of teacher leaders who can move the work forward • Staying engaged in the work and collaborating with community and stakeholders

Consider the Following Action Steps: • Develop a plan that includes building awareness, transitioning and implementation • Assist in identifying adjustments in the school day scheduling and programming • Prioritize resources and allocations that support teachers and students • Coordinate teams of teachers to lead alignment work • Advocate for high quality professional development • Develop a communication plan

Awareness • Create broad stakeholder awareness of the new Common Core State Standards (teachers, parents, principals, district administrators, school board members, civic leaders, elected officials, etc) • Prepare professional development presentations to highlight the Instructional Shifts for ELA and Mathematics • Develop a sustainable, long-term plan for implementation

  5. Transition • Identify and train lead teacher cadres who can be common core advocates and train other educators • Align district curriculum to the new CCSS and evaluate supporting resources for usefulness • Provide opportunities for educators to deconstruct the standards to develop a common understanding of their meaning • Develop Formative Assessments

Implementation • Support for the school and classroom • On-going professional development • Opportunity to practice and refine instructional strategies aligned to the CCSS • System for evaluating effectiveness of the plan and receive a cycle of feedback from educators on needs assessment • Understand the assessments • Continuous plan for communication • Continually review available resources

Examine School Infrastructure • Staff meetings become professional learning opportunities • Common planning time is a deliberate part of the school day scheduling • Resource dollars are reallocated to focus on professional development across all schools and all grades • Use of literacy and math coaches to provide job-embedded professional development

Examine School Infrastructure, cont. • Routine time is scheduled throughout the school year within the contract day for collaborative professional learning. • Opportunities are created for teachers to be able to visit other classrooms/schools. • Opportunities are provided for teachers to attend/participate in specialized professional learning outside of their school day.

Professional Development • Includes all teachers, including paraprofessionals and teachers in non-tested grades/subject areas • Is collaborative • Is compensated if outside of the school day/year • Identifies a Process for monitoring and assessing effectiveness • Provides clear purpose for use of information • Provides additional support – webinars and resource libraries

  10. Professional Development, cont. • Ensure capacity to maintain accurate records regarding teachers’ professional development. • Acknowledge that there are multiple types of professional development offerings to access. • Provide support for professional learning.

  14. The Standards • The goal of these standards is for all students to be college- and career-ready. • The standards: • are more focused • call for deeper levels of cognitive understanding • hold higher expectations for our students • This has REAL and SIGNIFICANTimplications for instruction.

Adoption of Standards • To be meaningful, the standards will need a comprehensive systematic approach consisting of: • aligned curriculum, professional development, resources, assessments • time for planning and collegial conversations • adequate teaching and learning conditions • collaborative labor management relationships
