The amount of light a plant needs may not be available especially during winter season where the daytime hours are insufficient to supply the light. Grow lights are also used in controlled environment such as in green houses and now the recent but an old discovery; the hydroponic system.

Lights are specifically regulated to guarantee plant growth even during the nights.

Types of grow lights Many types of grow light exist. These include LEDs, fluorescent incandescent bulbs but for professional purpose HIDs are mostly used. These lights have the potential to give varying colors by blending different gases.
The electricity is passed through ceramic or sometimes glass tubes which contain various gases. There two types of HIDs grow lights; the metal halide bulbs commonly known as MH bulbs and the high-pressure sodium referred to as HPS.
Similar to other grow lights the electricity is passed through tube filled with gas. Unlike the MH bulbs, the HPS ones last longer but they too need to be replaced after a period of 18 months elapses. These bulbs have many benefits but major one is that the colors of the plants and people are not distorted by these lights hence most ideal for use in living areas.
