  2. With the New Year comes a fresh sense of ambition. Out of nowhere there seems to come a deep-seeded desire to accomplish tasks you failed to conquer the previous year. Some people decide they will lose weight. Others make a point to get out of debt.

  3. I convinced myself I would convert the boxes of home videos in my garage into a modern format and sent it out to other family members as a late holiday gift of sorts.

  4. I already had the hardware on hand to playback the VHS tapes and record the output onto my computer. The result was a WMV file that I couldn’t get to play back on my system.

  5. After doing a little research, I found that this particular file type was incompatible with the media that I—along with a good majority of my family—used on their systems. In our particular situation, I would need to convert these WMV files to MOV. This is where I ran into issues.

  6. The software I used to copy the VHS tapes was not capable of creating a new video file that was not in the WMV format. I spent a good bit of time fidgeting with the settings hoping I would discover how to change the file output. I had no such luck.

  7. Feeling a little defeated, I went to do a little Google search for an online video converter. Thankfully, I was directed to convert-it.org where I was able to find such a program to help me finish up my first New Years project!

Despite some corrupted files that I inadvertently tried to process, the video converter simply skipped these files and informed me that they were corrupted after successfully converting the other files. This was a huge plus for me as I know that other video converters often crash when they encounter invalid or corrupted files.

  11. An unexpected but very useful feature I discovered while using this software was the ability to download a file from the Internet and convert it to the desired file type.

  12. Using this feature, I was able to take family videos that were uploaded to Facebook and download them directly to my hard drive for offline use. By using the online video converter software from convert-it.org, I have been able to successfully compile a large amount of family videos on my device and convert them for use on my preferred media player.
