Different types of LLN Assessments Skills Checker (formerly known as screener) • Indicates a general need below Level 2 Initial Assessment • Identifies broad levels within the National Standards Diagnostic Assessment • Provides detailed profile on LLN levels in reading, writing, speaking and listening

Which type of LLN Assessment for R&S? • Applicant likely to have ‘spiky profile’ of LLN skill levels • Important not to set the ‘bar’ to high or too low in R&S process • Diagnostic LLN assessment only one that will give comprehensive assessment of skills and levels • Diagnostic assessment unlikely to be practical within R&S process

  9. Choosing an LLN Assessment Tool for R&S cont • DHL choice - Target Skills Initial Assessment • Takes about 30 mins • Will not test for every LLN skill within job role • Will provide a profile of different levels for reading, writing and maths

Enhancing employment opportunities through R&S – major employer’s policy: • Application for external job or internal promotion • Following LLN assessment • If one or two areas are one level below job role requirement (eg E2 when E1 required) offer can be made, subject to achieving required level within probation period • If more that 2 areas are below job role requirement, or one area is more that 2 levels below, then: • If met all other application criteria refer applicant to college/learndirect and give provisional job offer subject to improvement within 6 months • If all other application criteria not met application declined giving feedback inc LLN levels, and guidance on local learning opportunities available
