Supporting All Students with Disabilities in the General Education Curriculum Kathy Kilgore May 8, 2014
Stand up/Sit down… • 2001 No Child Left Behind Act • 1990 American with Disabilities Act • 1975 The Education for All Handicapped Children’s Act • 1973 The Rehabilitation Act (Section 504) • 1954 Brown vs the State Board of Education
Turn to the person next to you… • …share one thing that has changed in education in the past… • 10 years • 20 years • 30 years • 40 years • …have outcomes for students with disabilities improved over the last 39 years?
Inclusive Practices • Providing the type and level of targeted support a student needs in order for him/her to be successful in the general education curriculum and to meet higher expectations • Ensuring a continuum of support and services is available to all students
39 years and still going… • Why are positive outcomes for students with disabilities still not being fully realized? • Why is “inclusion” not standard operational practice in all schools? • Why are many schools not implementing more inclusive practices?
Kathy’s Top Reasons • Lack of effective leadership • Staff not having the necessary skills • Staff not supported in their efforts • Revolving door approach to interventions/strategies • Lack of creative problem solving (Turn to your Partner )
On the positive side… • It only takes one to facilitate change • Actions speak louder than words • It’s catching
Where there’s a will, there’s a way… • Maintain your passion • Stay focused • Walk the walk
