  2. Entry 3 and Applied Science • Entry 3 units can be used as part of the level 1 Pathways Applied Science qualification • Pathways Applied Science is accredited for use in England and Wales. • From Sept 2012 Pathways Applied Science cannot be used against performance tables in England.

  4. Pathways Qualifications Level 1 Minimum credit • Certificate in Applied Science 13 • Certificate in Science for Work 15

  5. Which Level? • A level 1 Applied Science qualification can be obtained if at least 51% of units are at level 1 • The remaining credits may be at Entry 3 • Decisions about the level of qualification a candidate is awarded is made at the cash-in stage

  6. Each unit has been designed around a central applied purpose which should act as a focus for learning. Unit introduction: Learner friendly introduction

  7. Applied and experiential learning • A&el stresses the central role of experience in learning related to the world of work. • Learners reflect on their experience, draw out and articulate lessons learnt (generalise), and then….. • apply their learning to new situations or activities.

  8. Applied learning – purposeful learning • Each unit has been designed around a central applied purpose which should act as a focus for learning. • The applied purpose is the vehicle through which the learning in the unit is made relevant and purposeful. • It is also the means by which learners are enthused, engaged and motivated to study science

  14. Controlled Assessment • All level 1 units are assessed through controlled assessment • WJEC produce model assignments • Changes to assignments are permitted within clearly defined rules • Centres mark candidate work • WJEC moderates centres marking
