  1. Improving on driving

  2. Technology is increasing the amounts of car accidents • Nearly half a million people (448,000) were injured in a recent year in car accidents involved distracted driving (the providence journal)

  3. 18 percent of all reported deaths from distracted driving involved a cell phone • The insurance institute for highway safety contends that drivers who use hand-held devices are four times more likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves

  4. Younger drivers are the greatest cause of car accidents • The national highway traffic safety administration says that drivers under 20 have, in proportion to other age groups, the most instances of distracted driving. The next age group is under 29.

  5. One Nielsen study from last fall concluded that the average teenager sends more than 3,000 texts a month and that texting is now the number one reason that teens desire their own cell phone. • Without proper education and laws, it is reasonable to conclude, teens will exhibit the same behavior when behind a wheel as when otherwise going about their business.

  6. There are many things being done now to prevent technology related accidents

  7. Sprint unveils new smart phone app to combat distracted driving • Sprint is the latest cell phone carrier to join in the fight against distracted driving • The app locks the phone when the car is moving over 10 mph • Calls will go automatically to voicemail. Alerts for email or texts will be silenced when activated, and an automated, customizable message will be sent as a response • Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile (first carrier) has the application
