Ron Hubbard’s ideas of dianetics and science fiction • Not a popular lifestyle of it’s time period • Developed in 1952 as a hierarchical organization promoting his beliefs • More of an “applied religious philosophy than a dogmatic religion”, according to Hubbard • Started as secular, but eventually developed as a religion

Structure Of Beliefs • For an organization to officially apply the beliefs of scientology to their works, they must get licensed • No official religious text, but rather, a chronologically organized compilation of 18 books and 3,000 lectures. • Religion organized as a complex network of organizations • No absolute right or wrong • Cannot free yourself without working to free others

  4. Beliefs • The study and handling of the spirit in relation to others, itself, and all other life • Man’s existence spans for more than one life • Man makes mistakes because he fails to see his problems in more than his own view • Thetan, comes from Greek letter θ • Basic Good

  7. Health Care • Health Care beliefs are structured around self-healing of the mind and the idea of an immortal spirit. • Psychiatry and psychology are destructive and abusive practices

Birth and Death Rituals • Silent Birth • No distractions or possibility of pain or trauma • As little anesthetic as possible in child birth. • Breastfeeding should be avoided if the mother is not healthy, herself. • Funeral Service • minister speaks directly to the departing spirit • grants forgiveness for anything the deceased has done • Beginning of a new life

  9. Gender Roles • Equality • Standards for raising children • Family is an essential component of a stable family life. • Mutuality

  10. Effects On Health Care • Psychology or psychiatry is not an option • May seek spiritual self-healing rather than convention medical methods • “Auditing” will be essential after an accident • Traumatic events disrupt happiness
