  2. WEBOPAC ACCESSING OPAC Click on finding books button to access to OPAC

  3. WEBOPAC LIBRARY WEBOPAC What is OPAC? What are the functions of OPAC ? Why we must used OPAC? How to search for relevant items? How to get the item?

  4. WEBOPAC WHAT IS OPAC Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) is a computerized library catalog available to the public. Most OPACs are web based and accessible via the Internet. OPAC contains complete bibliographic and holding information of all items in the library.

  5. WEBOPAC WHAT IS OPAC 1 • The OPAC; • describes what the library owns • tells you where the items are • show you how to get the items 2 • Plus, the OPAC tells you; • if item is available or checked out • if checked out, it lets you process a request online The OPAC is like a map connecting you to the collections of the library that you seek.

  6. WEBOPAC WHAT IS OPAC The new OPAC has • More information (such as whether the item is checked out or on the shelf) • More ways to search (such as by author, title, subject and keyword) 3 Even better, you can check the OPAC from your computer at home!

  7. WEBOPAC WHY USE OPAC INSTEAD OF BROWSING THE SHELVES • Books that contain information on particular topic may be shelved in several different areas of the library, in special collections, or even in different libraries altogether. • Books are shelved in the library by call number order ( unique number for each book). At UniMAP Library, books are categorized and classified according to Library of Congress Classification Scheme. 1 2

  8. WEBOPAC INSIDE THE OPAC The OPAC includes all the items owned by the library. Typically, a library is more than just a building; many university libraries have a numerous branches. In fact, we have 2 branches in Kangar and Ulu Pauh campus. OPAC includes many type of materials and not just a book! CDs Electronic resources Video Books

  9. WEBOPAC OPAC vs WEB Searching the OPAC isn’t the same as searching the web. In contrast, the web (www) : • Contains billions of web pages • Has no quality control – nobody checking whether all information is correct or misleading, up-to-date or outdated, useful or offensive. The web continuously to grow as an important information source to us. That’s why most library OPAC have a links to websites selected by librarians. Library OPAC give us access to : • Library materials that has been catalog by librarians • Physical items the library has, like books, CDs, Kits, etc. • Electronic resources that you view on your computer
