Principal Thoughts & Expectations • ALL children can learn • Enabling others to act (coaching & support) • Creating an environment where student learning comes FIRST • Filtering all decisions through the question: “What is in the best interest of the students?” • Modeling the way (actions) • Encouraging the heart (celebrate success)

Principal Thoughts & Expectations Make Every Minute & Conversation Count With students and parents: • Clear, Consistent Communication & Feedback • Positive Reinforcement • Connecting w/Students-(Greeting Students at 1st Bell) Between staff members: • Speaking of all students with high regard • Sharing Best Practices/Continuous Improvement • Approaching challenges in a way that demonstrates a consistent bias toward problem-solving and getting support to students Knowing: • What we have control over makes all of the difference

  4. Principal Thoughts & Expectations Discipline with Dignity (calm, firm, fair) • Responsibility of all • Clear & Consistent • Students actively engaged • Refocus is NOT a punishment You can not hold people accountable for what you have not made explicit. –Dr. Anthony Muhammad

  5. Teaching Classroom Expectations • Teach expectations explicitly (HOW TO’s) • Look for performance on expectations (monitor behavior) • Feedback on behavior - both positive and negative

  6. BEHAVIOR HOW TO • I DO - Model the perfect behavior. - Show students not so perfect - Show students negative behavior • WE DO - Have students practice perfect behavior. - Teacher monitors and corrects • YOU DO - Have each student practice the positive behavior. - Teacher monitors and corrects

  7. PROMPTING • NO QUESTIONS!(Cynthia, do you think you could stop tapping your pencil?) • Use a short, polite statement indicating direction to student. (Cynthia, we need quiet hands please.) • Use gestures, modeling and physical prompts. (I love the way you are working - gently placing the pencil in Cynthia’s hands.
