THANK YOU ! • On behalf of the faculty and students from the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, thank you for coming this evening. • We hope you will enjoy the performances of these students as they bring together their knowledge of languages and cultures with their other fine talents. • Many thanks to all of the faculty in the departments of Languages, Literatures and Cultures and Music who helped to recruit and assist the performers this evening. • Warmest thanks to our accompanist, Allison Wente ’09, to Dining Services for the international desserts after this evening’s performances, and to Fulvia Alderiso, Language Learning Center Technician & Kellen Mickley. • We are especially grateful to Provost Marjorie Hass for her generous support of this program.

ITALIAN POEM Blessing “Benedizione” written by Linda Kreithen (July ’97) She lifts the white-handled bowl out of the cabinet, gathers from the refrigerator the twelve- grain pancake mix, two eggs, walnut oil, skimmed milk, and her tupperware of wheat germ, oat bran and lecithin, sees again her father sitting at the breakfast table, hacking on his Lucky Strikes, gulping bacon and three eggs, easy over more than thirty years ago as she ignites the griddle, blends liquid ingredients to dry, mixes in a benediction -- may all of us live long and healthy lives -- throws in some frozen blueberries, and with firm resolve spoons on the batter, waits fort he bubbles to appear, flips them until golden, then lays them out on a large oval platter buttering lightly while still hot, then dusting the tops with cinnamon sugar. Each days he makes this offering for her husband and son. May her merit defend them -- Amen.
