  2. Scenario 1 • Clyde wants to see which flavor of Kool-Aid stains teeth more. He used four different flavors of Kool-Aid and measured the amount of stain on their teeth after drinking the Kool-aid. • What is the independent variable? • What is the dependent variable? • What are the controls of the experiment?

  3. Scenario 1 Answers • IV- Kool-Aid Flavors • DV- Amount of stain on the teeth (qualititative data) • Controls- same of amount of Kool-aid each time to each person; examine the same teeth on each person; have people just drinking water

  4. Scenario 2 • Niall wants to know if licorice tea helps him sing louder. Niall drinks 8 oz of licorice tea before each show for two weeks straight. He records the decibels (how we measure sound strength) for each concert. Then he drinks just hot water for two weeks straight and records the results in decibels as well. • What is the independent variable? • What is the dependent variable? • What are the controls?

Scenario 3 • Lola wants to know which brand of light bulb saves the most electricity (and money at the same time).  She was told that she could replace her regular light bulbs with special fluorescent bulbs that use less energy.  • What is the independent variable? • What is the dependent variable? • What are the controls?

  8. Scenario 4 • The Eden’s want to know which brand of dog shampoo decreases shedding the best. They wash their dog Scruffles with their regular shampoo two times a week for 1 month and record the amount of dog hair sucked up by the vacuum. They then wash him with DeShedder500 two times a week for one month and also measure the amount of dog hair in the vacuum. • What is the problem? • What would be a good hypothesis? • What is the independent variable? • What is the dependent variable?

  9. Scenario 4 Answers • The problem is Scruffles sheds too much and they want to know which shampoo can decrease that. • DeShedder500 will decrease Scruffles shedding by 50% • IV- Shampoo • DV- Amount of dog hair

  10. Scenario 5 • Gigi is very confused as of to why her friend Mornie isn’t very productive. Concerned for her well being she looks up on Pinterest ways to increase productivity. She finds that chewing peppermints can increase focus. She give Mornie 1 peppermint before giving her a stack of paper she need to staple into packets to see if it does increase her productivity. She also played music too in the background to see if it helped. She counts the number of packets after one round and determines peppermints don’t help at all. • What is the independent variable? • What is the dependent variable? • What are some errors in this experiment?

  11. Scenario 5 Answers • IV- peppermints/music • DV- Number of stapled packets • Errors- She only did one trial and didn’t record any data. She also tested more than one item so you really cannot make a conclusion about the data.

  12. Scenario 6 • Jimmy wants to see if adding fertilizer to the soil would increase the rate of growth on the plant. The fertilizer was added to the soil of three plants and three plants had no fertilizer. He measured the height of all 6 plants each day and compared them. • What is the independent variable? • What is the dependent variable? • What are the controls?

  13. Scenario 6 Answers • IV- fertilizer vs none. • DV- height of the plants • Controls- amount of fertilizer, type of plant, same size pot, same amount of sun, watered at the same time everyday with the same amount of water
