  1. CACOA 2007 2nd Workshop on Case Based Reasoning and Context-Awareness

  2. CBR and Context Awareness • context is “any information that can be used to characterize the situation of an entity” [Dey] • in CBR, context serves as a major source for reasoning, decision-making, and adaptation • physical characteristics of the task environment • knowledge states (of both the application and user) • user beliefs and emotions

  3. CaCoA Workshop Metrics • 2 organizers • 9 program committee members • 3 papers • 7-15 participants • discussions along several themes

  4. Presentations • Explanations and Case-Based Reasoning in Ambient Intelligent Systems (Jörg Cassens and Anders Kofod-Petersen) • importance of explanations in ambient intelligence systems • hospital pre-ward rounds application • context relates to the features of the environment • recognise (situation), elucidate (why situation), identify (action), explicate (why action)

  5. Presentations • Implicit Profiling for Contextual Reasoning About Users’ Spatial Preferences (Eoin Mac Aoidh, Michela Bertolotto, David Wilson) • implicit observations of context (mouse movements) to build user interest models • geographical information system • context involved metrics related to the movement of mouse pointer (similar to eye tracking)

  6. Presentations • The Role of Context Models in Association with Flexible Design Processes - Position Paper (Mirjam Minor, Daniel Schmalen, Andreas Koldehoff) • associate process models with formal context models • chip design • items are digital design projects at a stage of their life-cycle • context related to features that influence the design process • top level ontology for context modelling

  7. Discussion Themes • more than 175 different notions / definitions of context [Brezillon] • definitions of context for CBR • changes meaning of situation [Casens] • task based [Minor] • not static (e.g. recommenders) [MacAoidh] • what we don’t understand/model fully [Schaaf] • must be useful • context awareness versus context sensitivity • challenges regarding the evaluation of context-aware CBR systems

  8. Workshop Outputs • participants expressed satisfaction and interest • future of the CaCoA workshop? • interest in sequel(s) of CaCoA does exist • 3rd workshop on CaCoA should be organized • proceedings are online • http://CEUR-WS.org/Vol-271/ • set up a Google group • http://groups.google.com/group/cacoa • public, anyone can join, informal
