  1. About us John Ketchell

  2. What is CEN? • One of three European Standardization Organizations, recognized by the EC • A non-profit association, whose members are national standards bodies (BSI, DIN, AFNOR, etc.) • Creating the European single market

  3. …and CEN/ISSS? CEN/ISSS was established: • to provide a “one-stop shop” within CEN on ICT standardization-related issues [“ICT”=Information and Communication Technologies] • to add value in an area neglected by formal standardization

  4. The ICT arena • Hardware and software companies mainly non-European • Technologies moving ever faster • Traditional approaches therefore little use Therefore: • limited market for International or European Standards (telecommunications excepted) • hundreds of “standards consortia”

  5. The results • Key technologies may not inter-operate • The wheel is re-invented • Users of technologies can’t participate easily • There’s a lack of information on what’s available where

  6. Our solution • To be as quick as consortia • To be more open • To add value with European solutions • To provide standardization that the market wants

  7. ISSS now • 9 Technical Committees • 20 (+3) Workshops • EDIFACT messaging • Value-added services

  8. The CEN/ISSS Workshop • Open to all interested parties • A public process - Business Plans on web • Main product a CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA) - approved by Workshop consensus, published by CEN national members • Technical specifications, guidance material, best practice, information

  9. CEN/ISSS Workshops Total workshops started since Feb.’98 26 Workshops announced 3 Workshops closed 6 4 main types: • eCommerce • In support of legislation • Public interest • Application technologies Total participation 1 July 2000 1244 CEN Workshop Agreements 22

  10. To conclude • We are European, not global (though participants from >40 countries!) • We add value through open consensus • We add value through bringing in user communities • We hope to contribute sensible European views to counter hype • We are a vital tool for self-regulation
