  1. Wake-up • Explain the term genetic engineering. • What is the purpose of restriction enzymes? Think about the activity. • You’ve found out that the child you (or your wife) carries has the gene for dwarfism. A new therapy exists that may repair this gene before the child is born. What do you do? Explain. • Allow the child to be born with the gene; we will accept the child as it is. • Attempt the new therapy to repair the gene

  2. Wake-up What process is responsible for creating the gel below? Who is guilty? Explain how you know. Which fragments will be at the bottom of a gel: large or small fragments?

  3. Wake-up • Explain what the term Evolution means? • Provide an example of evolution.

  4. Wake-up • Explain the difference between adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells. • Why are stem cells so controversial?

  5. History of Evolutionary Thought Christopherson

  6. Write down two to three “things” that pop in your mind when you hear the word: Evolution

  7. Pre-Darwinian Thought All organisms are perfect. They will remain unchanged throughout their lives.

  8. George Cuvier (1782-1832) Paleontologist Noticed in digging for fossils that there were several layers/levels of Earth. In each level, found organisms that resemble organisms alive today. As he got deeper similarities started to fade.

  9. Relative Dating Deep = Old Toward the surface = Younger

  10. Theory of Catastrophism Each level represents a time of a catastrophe. The fossils that he found are organisms that got wiped out by catastrophe. Organisms that are living, survived.

  11. Jean Baptiste Lamarck Curator at a science museum in Paris Compared the living organisms to the fossil collection Found similarities which led him to believe they might have a similar ancestor

  12. Theory of Use and Disuse: The parts of the body that an organism uses to survive will become developed and strong. If not used will disappear. Inheritance of Acquired Characteristics: Any trait an organism acquires in its life will be passed on to its offspring.

  13. Wake-up • Explain Lamarck’s theories by creating your own example. Remember, he created his theories by analyzing the different neck lengths in giraffes. • What is the Theory of Catastrophism state?

  14. Developed ways to travel to other countries across the ocean Found new areas with organisms NEVER seen before.

  15. Charles Darwin Father of Evolution. LOVED nature Medicine Studied Theology; LOVED science Age of 22: Became a naturalist aboard the HMS Beagle

  16. Saddleback Tortoise

  17. Domed Tortoise

  18. Galapagos Islands

  19. Thomas Maithus “The human population grows faster than the Earth. As a result of this large population, we experience death, starvation, and competition”

  20. Theory of Natural Selection Survival of the “Fittest”: The best adapted individual will survive and pass on their traits to their offspring
