In the 1860 presidential election, the Republican Party nominated Abraham Lincoln amidst deepening divisions in the Democratic Party over slavery, resulting in two separate nominees: Stephen Douglas and John Breckinridge. Lincoln's victory, fueled by overwhelming support in the North, triggered fears in the South of potential abolitionist policies. This led to South Carolina being the first state to secede from the Union on December 20, 1860, followed by several others forming the Confederate States of America under Jefferson Davis. Tensions escalated as both sides braced for conflict.
