This paper discusses the importance of interoperability in addressing the high cost of authoring in Adaptive Educational Hypermedia (AEH) systems, ensuring content remains relevant amidst rapid developments. It explores the many-to-many paradigm, conversion and lingua franca approaches, and interoperability of materials, content, user models, and presentation. A comparison of MOT and WHURLE user models, transfer of user models, conceptual conversion, and additional user information is examined. The potential methods for achieving user interoperability, such as middleware or standard user models, are considered, along with the need for a core set of variables. A common data storage framework for system-specific data is proposed.

Introduction • The need for interoperability: • High cost of authoring for AEH • Authored content becoming outdated • Rapid rate of developments in AEH
Our Approach • The ideal many-to-many paradigm • The conversion and lingua franca approaches • Interoperability of materials, content, adaptation rules, user models and presentation

Discussion • Interoperability of users can be achieved either: • With a middleware program, or • By building a standard user model • Extract common factors • Some UM variables have no equivalent • A core set of variables is needed • Assumptions • A common data storage framework to retain the system specific data
