The Need for Communication • Long distance interaction has always been a worry for humans. • Humans are social animals, and need communication to strengthen relationships. • Social media is actually the result of many centuries of social media websites. 2
Beginning of Long Distance Communication • Dating back as early as 550B.C. with the postal service. • No changes to communication till 1792, with the telegraph. • Much quicker than the postal service and saved a lot of time. • Revolutionized the way news was communicated. 3
1890 and 1890 Most Important Years • In 1890 the telephones was invented. • Then in 1891 the radio was invented. • What we envision as telephones and radios are far more sophisticated. 4
The 20th Century • The century of a technological boom. • 1940 was the beginning of super computers. • Soon after, engineers began creating networks between the computers • This network would later become the Internet 5
The Internet • Development of the Internet began in the 1960s and 1970s. • The earliest forms of the Internet were CompuServer and UseNet. • UseNet was the more advanced, and allowed communication through newsletters. 6
The Beginning of Social Networking • In 1978 the bulletin board system (BBS) was invented • BBS early on connected Duke University and the University of North Carolina through UseNet. 7
Social Networking Improved • A decade after BBS, social media became more sophisticated as home computers became popular. • In 1988 Internet relay chatting became popular. 8
First Social Networking Sites • The first recognizable social networking site, Six Degrees, was released in 1997. • It allowed users to upload profiles and friend each other. 9
Blogging • In 1999, blogging sites created a media sensation. • The trend is still popular to this day • Blogging lead to the popularity of all social media sites. 10
Modern Social Networking • MySpace got big in the early 2000s but died out. • YouTube was created in 2005 and currently gets about 1 billion users every month. • Facebook was created in 2004 and has 1.3 billion users and counting • Twitter and Instagram are the new big social networks, containing users in the 100s of millions. 11
