English 10- 9/17/12 • “The purpose of school is to help students see that where they are is not where they’re always going to be.” - Lorraine Monroe • Why couldn't the English teacher write the # 11? • Goobies – A family word for all the things a teenager should not do. “Beware the Goobies.” Goals – Introduce personal essay assignment, work on hooks. Homework – Complete first draft of your hook in the first paragraph, word processed. Save it as “Personal Essay D1.” Don’t forget the Vocab. Quiz Friday, week 4 words.

English 10- 9/18/12 • Why might heart and mind be important in writing an essay? • What happens when you run around in an elephant’s stomach? • Additur – The power of the court to increase the amount of money awarded to a plaintiff by a jury. Goals – Focus on the heart of your essay, your story, anecdotes, examples, and dialogue. Check an essay sample then in class writing time. Homework – Complete first draft of your “body”, word processed. Add it to “Personal Essay D1” save as “Personal Essay D2.”

English 10- 9/19/12 • How can the heart of your essay illustrate your approach to the future? • Do you know the difference between illegal and unlawful? • Barratry – The stirring up of lawsuits or quarrels. Often applied to lawyers who inspire suits they benefit from. Goals – Focus on the closing of your essay, analysis of values described and future directions, link to hook as last sentence. Homework – Complete first draft of your closing, word processed. Add it to “Personal Essay D2” save as “Personal Essay D3.”

  4. English 10- 9/20/12 • How can you help another student make their essay better? • What kind of bats live in a belfry? • Bulletproof – Said of a contract or other document that has no loop-holes. Goals – Share the draft of your essay with a friend, exchange ideas, and make hand written revisions on the original draft. Fill out the Peer Review Steps form. Homework – Complete the final draft including the revisions from your peer feedback. Add it to “Personal Essay D3” save as “Personal Essay D4.”

  5. English 10- 9/21/12 • Five minutes to review for the vocabulary quiz. • You know it’s raining cats and dogs out there? • Usufruct – Old legal term for the right to use something as long as it is not broken, used up, or changed. Goals – Complete Week 4 vocabulary study, finish and turn in personal essays by the end of the day. Pulling together final drafts. Turn in all drafts with the peer review sheet. Put the final draft on top. Homework – None.
