  3. Task:Youare working the Department of Environment (DEFRA) and you have been asked to write an important report on managing the risk of coastal erosion along the Essex Coast. In your report you have to evaluate the following areas:- • Evaluate and explain the threats to the site. • Evaluate and explain the success of the current defences • Evaluate the sustainability of the defences now and for the future.

  4. Key points to remember!!! • Include facts, figures and pictures as evidence. • Explain in PEE (point, explain, evidence) paragraphs whenever you can. • Your report should be no longer than 3 sides of A4 paper. • Use the levelling mark scheme throughout the write up.

  5. Sustainable? Sustainable – development meeting the needs of people now and in the future, limiting harm to the environment Show your understanding of how people, the environment and the economy are inextricably linked at all levels from local to global. Think about how the coastal erosion affected people, the environment and the economy at a local and other scales. What the impacts are and who will benefit and who will lose depending on the coastal management you recommend.

  6. Location of Walton on the Naze In the 1st section you need to explain where Walton on the Naze is located. You must use maps and also describe its relative location to other places. Use compass directions and distance in KM / Miles from other places.

  7. Erosion at Walton on the Naze You need to explain the causes of erosion at Walton. Remember key terms such as 4 key processes of erosion: • Attrition • Abrasion • Hydraulic Action • Solution Transportation: longshore drift The Cliffs are made up of clays overlain by sand and gravel. In the Winter the coast is pounded by high energy waves from the North Sea!

  11. Evaluating Defences • What are the positive aspects of this defense? • Why are the negative impacts of this defense? • Who do they benefit? • Are they sustainable? (Long term solution for people, money & the environment) Don’t forget a conclusion!
