Los adjetivos demostrativos • Used to describe the location of persons, places or things relative to the position of the speaker (the distance from the speaker) • Always agree in number and gender with the noun they modify. • Always go in front of the noun. They replace el, la, los, and las.

Remember!!! Demonstrative adjectives agree in # and in gender with items that the speaker is describing relative to their position. aquellos refrescos estos libros esa pluma

¡Ojo! (Watch out!) Do not get the adjective ESTA confused with the verb ESTAR (to be). ESTA without an accent mark means THIS. Don’t forget they agree in # and gender. Ex: masculine / feminine and singular / plural.
Demonstrative Pronouns To use a demonstrative adjective (that car) as a demonstrative pronoun (that one), drop the noun and add an accent on the first “E” • Dem Adj: Este carro (viejo)= This (old) car • Dem Pron: Éste(viejo) = This (old) one • Dem Adj: Eselápiz (amarillo) = That (yellow) pencil • Dem Pron: Ése(amarillo)= That (yellow) one • Dem Adj: Aquelchico (alto) = That (tall) boy over there • Dem Pron: Aquél(alto)= That (tall) one over there. *Follow this rule for all the demonstrative adjectives
