Be sure to thoroughly "sell" yourself by highlighting all of your strengths • Leave all these things off your resume: • Social security number • Scholarships and irrelevant awards • Irrelevant associations and memberships • irrelevant publications and irrelevant activities • A second mailing address • References "available upon request“ • Travel history • Previous pay ratesand previous supervisor names • Reasons for leaving previous jobs • Components of your name (which you never use e.g. middle name)

The grant agency must also believe that you are the best person to do this particular research, so you should cite yourself both early and often • Feel free to cite other papers as well, so long as you are on the author list • Once you get the grant, your university, company, or government agency will immediately take 30 to 70% of it so that they can heat the building, pay for Internet connections, and purchase large yachts

  8. finally • Proofread, proofread, proofread • Be sure to catch all spelling errors • Grammatical weaknesses • Unusual punctuation • Inconsistent capitalizations • Proofread it numerous times over at least two days to allow a fresh eye to catch any hidden mistakes
