  2. Summary • What is the Eleonet project • The context • The expected output • The consortium • A picture of the final system

  3. What is the Eleonet project • Eleonet stands for: “European Learning Object Network” • Is a project co-funded by the European Commission within the eTEN programme • It is described in a single phrase as follow: • Eleonet aims at creating a technological system, based on appropriate DOI application profile(s), to facilitate the exchange of educational content within the eLearning value chain at European level

  4. Collective rights org. and DRM Service providers eLearning platforms vendors Learning community Publishers eLearning providers Rights negotiation Other LO producers Content provision Content providers (created ad hoc) The context:the eLearning value chain

  5. Learning community Search DOI assignment and metadata provision The role of Eleonet in the eLearning value chain Collective rights org. and DRM Service providers eLearning platforms vendors Publishers eLearning providers Eleonet Other LO producers Content providers (created ad hoc)

  6. The expected output • A DOI registration system for European Learning Objects (based on mEDRA technology)… • …including complete metadata schema (based on existing ones, LOM in particular)… • …possibly mapped within the iDD system • A database of metadata on LOs • A search engine to explore and query the DB • A resolution system, based on DOI technology, to reach multiple repositories

  7. The consortium • AIE (co-ordinator) and Cineca, id est the two parent organisations of mEDRA • Editrain in Spain, a mEDRA partner since 2002 • Nielsen BookData in UK • L3S / TIB in Germany, the most recently appointed DOI-RA • INDIRE: an Italian public organisation specialised in metadata for educational content

  8. The consortium • Three Registration Agencies involved (mEDRA, Nielsen BookData and TIB) • Very involved in the publishing industry (AIE, NBD, Editrain)… • … and in the educational environment (Cineca, TIB, Indire, Editrain) • Metadata expert (Indire in the educational environment, NDB and AIE in publishing trade) • High technological experience (Cineca, in particular)

  9. Business A Business B Public service The importance for the DOI community • Collaboration within the community is seen as key factor to the outreach of the DOI in a new field • Common strategic development and possible independent business models • One key aspect is metadata collection and service provision using such metadata DOI registration Metadata collection Services provision enables enables

  11. Overview of the workplan • The funded project will last in 18 months, starting on 1st July 2005 • At the beginning of 2006 we planned a first pilot release, to be validated in the market • End of 2006 first commercial release of the system

  12. Conclusion • Eleonet is a project trying to demonstrate that collaboration within the DOI community is a key factor for our future. • We are also starting collaboration with the CORDRA project in the US and, in parallel, with the CAL course-pack system
