DOE’s Community College Institute provides laboratory-based internships

Through a 10-week summer internship, students:

  • Conduct authentic research under the guidance of a mentor
  • Learn to write a research abstract
  • Present at a poster session.

ACTS Success Story: HakanArmağan is Impacting Hundreds of Nebraska Students as a Result of His ORNL ACTS Experience

Conducted research at ORNL’s Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility for 3 summers

Overcame an initial fear of nuclear energy

After one year in the program, developed a course in energy and nuclear science for high school students

Incorporated hand-on activities and research into his classroom

Is planning to offer his course through distance learning across Nebraska

Presented at the American Nuclear Society’s Winter Meeting

Was featured in ANS’s Nuclear News

Credits ACTS with increasing his confidence and making him a better teacher AND scientist

doe wants teachers scientists to help bring research experiences to others
DOE wants teachers/scientists to help bring research experiences to others.

ACTS Teachers:

  • Have learned the value of an authentic research experiences
  • Have the connection with DOE research projects and scientists
  • Are prepared to develop projects that can be exported to thousands of other teachers and students so they can have authentic research experiences in their own classrooms.
collaborations between scientists and acts teachers bring ornl research directly to the classroom
Collaborations between scientists and ACTS teachers bring ORNL research directly to the classroom.

ACTS teachers have found many opportunities to bring ORNL Research to the classroom:

  • Superhydrophobics
  • Hybrid Lighting
  • Renewable Energy
  • Material Sciences
  • Biofuels
  • Environmental Remediation
  • Nanoscience
  • Effects of Compounds on Fish Development
  • Climate
sns to the classroom brings cutting edge science directly to students
SNS to the Classroom brings cutting edge science directly to students.
  • For teachers of advanced physics and math students
  • 3-day workshop in Oak Ridge followed by series on Webinars with scientists
  • Scientists teach accelerator basics
  • Teachers work with real SNS data
  • Software is provided to allow students to modulate a simulated neutron beam
ornl arc and orau partner to bring a taste of research to appalachia
ORNL, ARC, and ORAU partner to bring a taste of research to Appalachia.
  • Two-week residential summer institute
  • Teams of students and teams of teachers conduct mini-research projects under the mentorship of ORNL scientists and retirees.
  • Long term impact studies show that most students attend college; many major in science.
