  1. River Environments Weathering

  2. Aim -To understand weathering processes • To understand factors influencing weathering processes. • To understand mechanical weathering. • To understand chemical weathering. • To understand biological weathering.

  3. Weathering • What is your basic understanding of weathering?

  4. Weathering • Weathering is the decomposition and disintegration of rocks in situ. • Decomposition refers to the chemical process and creates altered rock substances. • Disintegration (mechanical weathering) produces smaller, angular fragments of the same rock. • Weathering is important for landscape evolution as it breaks down rock leading to erosion and transportation.

  5. Factors Affecting weathering • Climate • Geology • Describe the relationship between climate and weathering • Describe the relationship between geology and weathering • How can human activities cause an increase in the intensity and frequency of mass movements

  6. Homework For next Monday: In groups of 2 or, or 3, must create a presentation can be either PowerPoint or poster, to explain the formation of a landform The landforms to choose from are: • Oxbow lakes • Waterfalls and gorges • Braided channels • Floodplains and levees • Deltas • River terraces Remember: don’t just copy out of the book, I am looking for evidence of your own research
