  1. Update from the Photons + MET Group Bruce Schumm UC Santa Cruz / SCIPP 18 April 2012 SUSY Strategy Meeting

  2. MOTIVATION (SUSY) • Gauge mediation (GMSB): SUSY breaking w/ minimal flavor violation • LSP is Gravitino  phenomenology set by NLSP • Bino NLSP  di-photon + MET  Archetypal channel for looking for GMSB • Admit admixtures for 10, 1 (higgino, wino) • photon + MET + XXX signatures can be more sensitive; • XXX = lepton, bjets, Njets • Backgrounds probably too high for XXX = 0

  3. DiPhoton + MET Analysis • New for 5 fb-1 Analysis • Cleaner photons (electrons kill photons; no pixel hits for conversions • New kinematic variables (visible energy, -MET angular separation) • Three analysis thrusts (light bino, heavy bino, EW production) • TARGET: PLHC Physics Letters B 710 (2012) 519–537

  4. ATLAS/CMS Diphoton + MET 5 fb-1 Comparison ATLAS Cartoon https://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1436111?ln=en ATLAS expected ~100 GeV higher than CMS expected over much of Bino mass range (but our results not yet public)

  5. Photon + Lepton + MET Analysis ATLAS: Getting backgrounds in control for 5 fb-1 analysis CMS 35 pb-1 result

  6. Photon + b jets + MET Analysis • ATLAS 1 fb-1 photon + 2 bjets + MET analysis expectations • Biggest hurdle: Understanding and constraining top backgrounds • No CMS study to date • Targeting ICHEP for 5 fb-1 result

  7. Photon + X + MET Analysis ATLAS Analysis Preliminary study of back-grounds vs. #jets underway at SCIPP M. Tripiana joining La Plata group for 2012 analysis CMS CMS: Photon + 2 jets + MET

  8. Analyzing the 2012 Data All 2012 analyses: Moriond 2013 DiPhoton + MET Re-optimize for ~20 fb-1 Preserve region M  Mgluino Need 1-2 new students/postdocs (badly) Photon + Lepton + MET Background suppression studies Could use student to join Jovan

  9. Analyzing the 2012 Data Continued All 2012 analyses: Moriond 2013 DiPhoton + b jets + MET Higgs reconstruction to reject top backgrounds? Group seems well-formed Photon + X + MET General understanding of backgrounds Optimization Perhaps 1 student to join La Plata group?
