  1. Edgar Allan Poe January 19, 1809-October 7, 1849

  2. Born in Boston Poe was born to actor parents and had two siblings, an older brother and younger sister. By the age of three, Poe’s parents had died (mother of tuberculosis) and he was taken in by John and Frances Allan. By age 13 he had written enough poetry for an entire book!

  3. University of Virginia • 1826 – Poe left Richmond to attend the University of VA where he accumulated a lot of debt. Allan was very frugal and refused to give Poe enough money, so Poe resorted to gambling which put him further in debt. When he left Richmond he was engaged to Elmira Royster, but when he returned he found she was engaged to another man.

Poe’s young adult life • Poe published his first book of Poetry at age 18, called Tamerlane. • He then enlisted in the United States Army. • Two years later he found out that Frances Allan was dying of tuberculosis. She would die before he got to see her! • John Allan helped Poe get an appointment at West Point Military Academy. Before going, he published a second volume of poetry. After eight months, Poe was thrown out of West Point and then published another book of poems.

  5. Poe Goes to Baltimore • After West Point, Poe went to Baltimore where he had relatives. • His aunt, Maria Clemm, welcomed Poe into her home. During this time, Poe won a contest with one of his short stories, which allowed him to publish more stories and eventually gain an editorial position at the Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond. This is where Poe found his life’s work as a magazine writer.

  6. Poe marries virginia At age 27, Poe brought Maria and Virginia Clemm to Richmond, and then married Virginia. At the time she was not yet fourteen. Their marriage proved to be a happy one!

  7. Poe’s Career • Dissatisfied with his Poe at the Messenger, Poe moved to New York City. He wasn’t able to find a job and wrote his only novel during this time. • In 1938, Poe moved to Philadelphia and wrote for a number of different magazines. Even though he was becoming more famous, he was still barely able to make a living.

  8. Tragedy strikes • In 1842, Virginia contracts tuberculosis. • In 1844, they moved back to New York City. • In 1845, the publication of “The Raven” would make Poe a household name! He became famous enough to draw large crowds to his lectures. • Unfortunately, this success did not last long, and he was eventually forced to move again, this time to a cottage in the country.

  9. Virginia’s death • At this cottage, Virginia died in 1847 at the age of 24. Poe was devastated by her death and wasn’t able to write for months. • After her death, he traveled around the country giving lectures. Poe would only live for two more years!

  10. Poe’s Death • On his way to Philadelphia in 1849, Poe stopped in Baltimore. • While in Baltimore, Poe disappeared for five days. • He was found in the bar room of a public house that was being used as polling place for an election. • He was sent to Washington College Hospital where he spent the last days of his life. He died on October 7, 1849 at the age of 40. • The cause of his death remains a mystery!
