  1. MODULE 29 Dissociative, schizophrenia, and personality disorders

  2. SCHIZOPHRENIA • About 1 in 100 people are diagnosed with Schizophrenia. • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vYQ6pbJt2k

  3. Symptoms of Schizophrenia • Disorganized thinking/cannot filter information. • Disturbed perceptions/delusions (false beliefs) • Inappropriate actions • Inappropriate or missing emotions (Flat Effect) • Auditory hallucinations • Incoherent speech (Clang Effect)

  4. Three Types

  5. Paranoid Schizophrenia • Diagnosed through the presence of numerous and systemized delusions. • Delusions are usually “someone is out to get me” or of grandeur • Auditory and visual hallucinations accompany delusions.

  6. Disorganized/Catatonic Schizophrenia • Variety of bizarre symptoms. • Movement is disordered or waxy flexiblity (holding one position) • Often regress to childlike behaviors. • Neglect themselves… stop bathing, combing their hair, or using the bathroom. • Disorganized speech is apparent.

  7. Undifferentiated • Any one who does not fit into the other categories. • May have delusions or motor disorders, but not to the extent that he or she is considered Paranoid or Catatonic.

  8. Symptom/manifestation categories for Schizophrenia. • There are positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia (this does not mean “good” and “bad” as you may be thinking...) • POSITIVE SYMPTOMS+ = presence symptoms that healthy people do not experience that are present in schizophrenia (ex= auditory hallucinations) • NEGATIVE SYMPTOMS- = behaviors that are not present in the schizophrenic person, that are present in healthy persons (ex= flat effect). • http://health-tools.health.msn.com/schizophrenia/10-things-to-know-about-schizophrenia?gt1=31072 • http://player.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?guidAssetId=18C6E9F3-216C-4AEC-B767-771C379A652D&blnFromSearch=1&productcode=US
