  1. “Language shapes the way we think, and determines what we can think about.”

  2. Aims of the session… • Consider literacy and how it is / or could be taught across the curriculum • To give you some practical ideas and resources that you could use in the classroom to improve literacy (with a focus on writing).

  3. Task: Spend about 4 minutes at each table. When the time is up, we will rotate. There are also different snacks on each table! We will feedback at the end.

  4. What is literacy?

  5. Why teach literacy across the curriculum?

  6. What are the common literacy problems for our students?

  7. How do you think that literacy could be improved?

  8. Key Principles of LAC • Improving literacy and learning can have an impact on pupils’ self-esteem, motivation and behaviour. • It allows students to learn independently. It is empowering.

  9. Good literacy skills are a key factor in raising standards across all subjects. • Language is the main medium we use for teaching, learning and developing thinking, so it is at the heart of teaching and learning. • Literacy is best taught as part of the subject, not as an add-on.

  10. Task: On each table there is an envelope with literacy techniques that could be used in the classroom. Please discuss each technique – what is it? How could it be used to improve literacy?

  11. Technique – Description – Where to find out more Take a few minutes to look through the handout. If there is a resource that you would like to use, have a look at the three tables at the back of the room. Take whatever resources are useful to you!

  12. Thank you! Just before you go… On the post-it note on the table, jot down two techniques that you use or will try to use to improve literacy! Or make a note if you would like me to email you a resource. Put your post-it on the board! Thanks again…
