Circulatory system • Definition 1: Organs and tissues that transport essential materials to body cells and remove their waste products • Definition 2: a system that provides oxygen and nourishment to every cell of the body • 3 parts • Pulmonary circulation (LUNGS) • Coronary Circulation (HEART) • Systemic Circulation (SYSTEMIC/TISSUES)

Pulomnary circulation • Veins bring deoxygenated blood (Waste rich) back to the heart, enter through the right atrium through the vena cavae. • The right atrium contracts and pushes blood through the tricuspid valve (1-way) to the right ventricle. • The right ventricle fills and contracts to push blood into the pulmonary artery which leads to the lungs • THIS IS THE ONLY ARTERY THAT CARRIES DEOXYGENATED BLOOD

Pulmonary circulation contd… • In the lungs the exchange of Carbon dioxide and Oxygen takes place • Fresh oxygen rich blood enters the pulmonary veins and returns to the heart • THESE ARE THE ONLY VEINS THAT CARRY OXYGEN RICH BLOOD • The blood returns to the left atrium and then passes through the mitral valve to the left ventricle. • After that it exits the heart through the main artery, the Aorta.

  6. Which is which? • ARTERIES: Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart to the body (Oxygenated Blood) • VEINS: Blood vessels that carry blood to the heart from the body

  7. Coronary circulation • This is simple. • Your heart tissue receives nourishment through the capillaries located in the heart.

  8. Systemic circulation • This provides nourishment to all of the tissues in your body. • Blood vessels are responsible for all the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the tissues • From the aorta blood travels to smaller arteries that supply each tissue and organ its needed blood supply • (ARTERIES inside layer is smooth, allowing blood to flow quickly, outside layer is strong to move blood along forcefully) • The kidneys take much of the waste and filter it out from the blood to the excretory system. The rest of the deoxygenated blood goes back to the heart and the process STARTS ALL OVER AGAIN!

  9. STOP ! • Take a stethescope. • Listen to your heart. • The “LUB” “DUB” you hear are the ventricles contracting and the valves closing. • Can you hear your partners?
