  6. 1. Already have a Google account? Sign in here to increase its functionality. 2. Want a Google e-mail address? Sign-up here for a Gmail account and use it to access Google’s other features. 3. Already have an e-mail address but want to access Google’s other features? Use your already existing e-mail address to create a Google account here.

  7. Not ready to commit and want to experiment? Use the demo account I’ve established for this paper: canedemo@gmail.com cane2009

  8. My Account = settings for your account (password, etc.) iGoogle = customizable web page space for Google account holders

  9. What is the Scribe Method? • Intended for reading classes (but can be applied to other scenarios). • Rather than each student keeping their own translation, one scribe keeps a class translation that is then shared among the students.

  10. Previous Incarnations of the Scribe Method • notebook / hand-written • photocopied for students • network work group / shared folder • all students with access to folder on school’s network • Moodle: on-line course management tool subscribed to by the school • all students ‘enrolled’ in course on-line

  11. Click here for help with Google Docs. (Text below from this link.)

  12. Ensures students can focus on things other than a translation Allows students to customize their in-class notes to their needs and weaknesses Decreases time spent transcribing a translation Can be used to increase homework accountability Students can focus on things other than Latin (and still have a translation) Requires an active classroom to keep students engaged Technological glitches Errors in the translation? Advantages / Disadvantages to the Scribe Method

  13. 1. 5. 2. 4. 3.

  14. Sync Google Calendar with your mobile device or computer-based calendar program. Choose the amount of detail of your view of Google Calendar. Choose from among whatever calendars you have defined. Navigate the calendar by month and day. Create new events for your calendar(s).

  15. Dedicated on-line calendar that can be easily customizable. Ability to have multiple calendars is especially useful for teachers with multiple classes. Interface for creating singular events relatively straightforward. Sharable and available via the internet. Copying events and repeating irregularly events a bit cumbersome. Multiple calendars with overlapping events can be visually overwhelming. Requires daily updating if used for daily assignments. Technological glitches Advantages / Disadvantages to the Google Calendar

  16. Beginning Latin

  17. Navigate by Page Zoom controls Search the Book View as Text w/out book formatting Single- vs. Double-page Spread Buttons Drag Page Button Link to the TOC Embed Button Full Screen Toggle

  18. Once you have found an appropriate book / page, what do you do with it? For a small section of text (like on the previous slide), use your screen shot function to capture the text and paste it into a document (even if you have to do a couple shots to paste together a page). You can then annotate (vocab, instructions, etc.) as necessary. For more text (say, more than a full page), download the text and import pages as .pdfs. Integrating Google Books with Classroom Work

  19. A free application (rather than a website) downloaded to your computer. Platform independent (Macs or PCs). Satellite imagery of the world. zoomable, navigable, ‘twistable’ Specific layers (ocean floor, ancient Rome, etc.) Links to Wikipedia Integrated pictures from users of Google Earth. What is Google Earth?
